Hi all. Just joined the forum. Have a pure white 5dr manual on order.

Looking forward to it. Never owned a VW before, but plenty of Alfa's, BMW's and currently driving a W176 Merc A Class.

Hi nuvolablue and welcome - I came over from the new W176 A Class as well (A220). Are you sick of the rattles!! You won't regret the change - the quality improvement is noticeable - especially on the interior.

Hi GTD. Thanks. It isn't the rattles so much, more the unforgiving ride quality. I am on 18 inch alloys.
Looking forward to it.
A little worried about what I have read about paint issues; I'm solid white so hopefully won't affect me.
But also about rear spoiler trim coming loose.

I'm new to the forum (and the VW brand in general, too). My DD is an F10 528xi (I do lots of long-distance trips; almost never drive in the town). The Golf R I've on order is planned to be my wife's DD (she only commutes to work within the city), as well as my toy for those spirited driving moments :) (the 528xi is no good for it - to large, heavy and with this particular engine, a bit underpowered). I had a tough time deciding between the Golf R and the A 45 AMG; the thing that helped me make up my mind was lack of any suspension stiffness adjustment in the A45. Needed not so much by myself as for my wife so that she doesn't complain on comfort too much.

So do you guys think it was a good choice, even considering the Mercedes has 360 hp vs. "just" 300 in the R? Apart from the chassis, I also got tempted by the many reviews and comparisons claiming the Golf R's better handling and ride. Please tell me I didn't do a stupid thing - price-wise, a moderately loaded A 45 AMG was withing my reach!

Paint issues are quite rare, and the rear spoiler trim is nothing to worry about. They are only stuck on with double sided tape and a known issue. Both mine are both loose and will be sorted at my 10K service.

As for build quality, I so far find it on par or even slightly better than the last two BMW's I have had.

I have bought a maintenance plan inc tyres for £310. This is for 2 years and I do 5k miles per year.
Is that worth it do you think ?

Yeah - I was on 18's on my A as well. It was the run flats that made it pretty hard. The Golf is a much better ride on its 18's.

No paint issues on mine and one side of the rear spoiler did come loose after about a week but a good hard press on it and its stuck hard since.

I recognise your usename from AClassClub now - I was 'mon2s' over there.

Okay great. How long have you had your golf ? So i presume the golf R doesn't use run flats. What a relief. The run flats are horrible.

Since May 1st. After rejecting two A Class riddled with issues its a joy to own the Golf and yes you get a space saver spare wheel so no run flats!

With difficulty unless the dealer supports you and agrees you have valid grounds. Basically three attempts to put right a defect within the first 6 months of ownership.

Okay. Sorry you had that hassle. Tbh I have been very happy with my A Class. I love the 1.5 DCI engine. Very frugal but also a great cruiser on the motorway.
The R will of course be worlds apart ! It'll have 3 times the horse power to start with. Can't wait. Although mine will be coming in December as that is when my current lease ends.

Bit worried about how the lapiz alloys will fair after some inevitable kerbing.

Anyone have experience of refurbimg diamond cut alloys ? Is it more expensive ?

The price tbh. I will probably never be able to justify spending the required amount of for another car with similar firepower
