HELIX Soundbox (Like) Upgrade Option for Golf TSI.

former GTI owner

Yeah...I paid $7.31 from my dealer, but no shipping cost

This was for my Passat (deep spare wheel/trunk) and the guy had a GSW (deeper well too, I dunno?)....so I'm not sure if it'd work in a GTI/Golf or not though?

If it can, just stack them & measure how long of a "bolt" you need (to confirm)

And then, like I said, I bought another OEM bolt (which came with the nut) to get another nut to use with the new longer bolt

How long is your GTI's stock "bolt?"

Yours is definitely a more elegant solution. My soundbox is strapped to the spare tire with bungee cords, so it's kind of an ugly hack, but it works for now. Will look into getting the longer bolt. Thanks for sharing.

Finally got the Helix soundbox installed by the dealer, including the coding.

Definitely a BIG improvement from the factory system. In general the volume from all the 4 speakers and the woofer seems to be much higher and more pronounced.,

Happy with the setup :) for now.

I may order the Extended bolt for mounting the spare tires as well., though debating weather to go for a spray can of Fix A Flat tire or the real tire...

Good find! Currently have the spare sitting on top of the sub, held down with straps. This solution is much more elegant. Just placed my order, total for both items was $9.06 with tax, picked up locally.

Just something to consider, Fix-A-Flat doesn't repair sidewall damage or other catastrophic tire failure. Not to mention the mess it makes. I'd recommend keeping the spare in the car during normal use...

Yeah, I finally ended up mounting the spare wheels on top of the subs, with the extended bolts.

So, what I did was put the Helix on top of the spare (in my Passat).

I bought a longer OEM "bolt" (is what VW calls it) that holds down the spare tire and then another OEM bolt with the nut. ($13 in parts from the dealer for both).
The longer "bolt" didn't come with a nut, so that's why I had to order another OEM one....to get another nut (can't buy it on it's own)

I put the spare in, used the OEM nut on the longer "bolt" to hold the spare down, then put the Helix box on top, and then used the 2nd nut to hold the Helix in place on top of that.

The spare is heavier than the box, so you'd want that weight lower in the car ideally (to keep the center of gravity lower).
And that way everything is locked down properly/not moving at all. Adding the 2nd nut (holding the spare down), stabilized the "bolt" better too.

I don't know how long the OEM "bolt" was on your Wagon, but the one I bought was 7.5" long (end to end) and about 3.5" taller than my OEM one

There's also a longer 8.5" version of the bolt, but my dealer had to get it from Canada and not as easily available as the parts above and more money. The threads were a different pitch from OEM too...so you'd have to buy two of them (to have two nuts).
What I posted above was the easier & cheaper solution, IMO

This is God-damn BRILLIANT!!! Thanks!

I'm headed out on a road trip to Canada in a month, so this is timely. I didn't want to leave my spare and I didn't want some rigged-looking bullshit.

Got the two parts for $15.54 shipped from VWPartsVortex dot com. Thanks again.

Love the longer "bolt" setup shown here. But, I am 95% sure the GTI (all standard hatches?) don't have the space under the floor to stack the soundbox on the spare. It was one of the first things I tried when I got the Helix.

I'm more interested in a solid, secure setup with the spare and soundbox. If I have to lose the hatch floor, no biggie. I'm the rare person who hardly ever uses the cargo area. If I'm hauling cargo I use my 4Runner.

Gotcha! I am still looking for a permanent solution too. Haven't settled on anything yet. The longer bolt looks like a great find.

I guess you could jigsaw out a circle in the hatch floor if it didn't fit over the Helix box and then build a protective bridge over the Helix.

But that's some work and I'm a lazy mo....

VW probably charges like $899 dollars or something for a replacement floor if you ever go to sell too I bet. :p
