Ed's lights are great but it doesn't mean that it could not happen.

Wow, I didn't know there was so many issues with this. Mine isn't quite as bad as some of those, I would think its something in the headlight keeping moisture absorbed. On my old civic, every time I washed it the lights would fog up. As I said, when I washed my gti today there was no extra fogging, but when bringing the car outside I think the fog by the blinker expanded and went through the whole headlight, it wasn't as thick by the blinker as it was before I brought it outside. I'm staying optimistic that the silica will take care of it.

The thing that I really didn't like about ed's is he kinda knocks all the other brands. The other brands may be crap, but if your product is so good, it will sell itself without needing to talk down other brands. Just list what the product has to offer and leave it at that. And from what I've read, there are good reviews on them, that will be enough for people to buy.

Yep I've seen that too there is no need for that specially if you have a good product like his. I would buy his headlights in heartbeat just buy the reviews alone, he didn't have them in stock when I was looking for mine, but Helix was a brand that I had before so why not, another thing that I'm curious about is , who builds his units? Brand and such they seem to be rally good so I wonder who builds them. I wonder if the guys that have them saw a particular brand stamped to the housings. It would be cool to know.

That also a good point, interested to know who manufactures them. After doing some research today I found some pretty interesting information I thought I'd share.

I ended up buying a bag of calcium chloride and using that instead of my silica cat litter. I ended up taking the silica packs out that came with the headlight, after looking at them, they were pretty close to saturation, the fluid inside the pack was just about gone on both and the gel was getting tough. I'm anxious to see how the c.c. Works out!

Interesting, where did you get it? By he way, did you end up reusing the same bulbs? If so, how is the light output compare to the stock housing?

I went to my local hardware store, they only had 50lbs bags, but it's worth a try for $10. I took my silvania axe bulbs out of my old lights and swapped them, I'd say the projector illuminates a lot more, especially on the sides. The high beam is about the same, which was pretty good. Down a dark road, the led's alone are pretty bright.

This morning I looked at the car, no fog/moisture present in the headlight :)
I took the calcium chloride packs out and they did expand a little for sure. I'll be out of town all week so I put my cat litter silica packs back in and we will see what happens.

Passed Driver's Ed
Have you contacted the place you bought them from about this problem?
Brand new headlamps shouldn't be fogging up by any standards.

Seems like possibly poor quality seals or something,
Besides that.. They look great ! Really makes the front end of a GTI pop :D
Great install too. I didn't have to take my front bumper off either, but still. Looks great :D

No I did not. You're right though, new lights should not fog up. They came from California, I live in ny, right now we are at a high of 30f. I'm pretty sure my silica packs were saturated when I got them, they will put moisture back on the air, so once I took them out last night, that could also be the problem.

And thanks! I love the look!

Condensation, no matter how much people hate it, is a naturally occurring event. I have TSB's from VW informing dealerships to not replace headlights for condensation. http://stemen.net/passat/tsb-2011521-5.pdf
as well as many other manufacturers.

Vortex has a ton of threads in which the dealer wont cover condensation claims on OEM lights. https://www.google.com/search?q=condensation+site%3Avwvortex.com&sourceid=ie7&rls=com.microsoft:en-US:IE-Address&ie=&oe=&gws_rd=ssl

With Helix I noticed this on a set I installed as well. In California it has been 80F since and the customer stated it is all gone now. The bags will have moisture in them as it collects over time. Once you hit the lights it heats up the housing so it is burning off the moisture. Once you get some good heat cycles this should all balance out and be fine. The condensation is from the silica pack airing out so it will equalize with the atmosphere.

You would think manufacturers would come up with a better plan to solve this. It would be pretty irritating to buy a new $30k car and have you headlights fog up. I'm happy to hear that they did clear up as I hope mine do. I really do think the silica packs I left in the headlight from the factory had a little to do with it. At least, I feel better telling myself that, ha, but I won't know until the end of this week. These lights are great besides, i love the way the car looks now.

Looks like the fog is staying away. Yesterday was 60f then dropped to 40f at night with rain, very humid, the lights stayed dry . I took the cat litter silica packs out before hand. I Still have a hunch the old silica packs had something to do with the issue. Seemed like once I took those out, put calcium chloride in overnight, and then the new homemade silica packs for the week, it's gone. Needless to say, I'm a happy camper.
