Hard to start on cold engine

Hi everyone
I started to have this problem on my golf mk7. When the engine is cold and I'm starting it first time, it takes a lot of turning the engine to start it, it could take good 10 seconds to start it, even tho 10 seconds sound little, but when I'm in the car starting it, it feels like it takes for ever. It's that bad that people even stop and look around what is that trying to start and it turn out to be a brand new golf.
I haven't went to the dealer yet, but I will be in a weeks time, but before I go, just wondering if anyone experienced the same problem. When the car is hot or half hot, there is not problem starting it, starts the second the keys is turned and stop start starts straight away too, so any idea as what it could be ???
Thanks

well I will but im not happy with the dealer too much, they don't see to be able to find anything, had other issues and they could find anything.
Maybe someone else experienced this bad cold start too

It may be a daft question and forgive me if you already know ( but you would be surprised who don't) but are you waiting for the glowplugs to warm up ?
The amount of people who are only used to petrol who just put the key in their first diesel and turn the starter is amazing

yeah i do that, used to diesels, this is my 5th golf and they were all diesels.
and the only time i had starting problems was when my starter went and then when the battery went.
But its only 15k km on it, dont think any of this would apply.
Ill get it check in a week, but iv a feeling dealer wont find anything as usual.
But if ill find anything, Ill post it up :)

My Mk 5 was exactly the same problem. Went back to dealer several times over 2 years but they were unable to find fault even went I left it overnight in freezing condition. Fault still there when the glowplugs were allowed time to heat up, even though I was told modern diesels no longer needed this. Recently sold the car privately when weather not cold and have a petrol mk 7.

The problem seems to be bk now.
In the morning I turn ignition and coil stays on for couple of seconds and when it goes off, I turn the key and it starts the first turn!
But then I drive 50km and leave the car for 4 or 5 hours, the engine is gone bk cold!!!
I do the same, turn on ignition, but this time coil goes off nearly straight away and when I turn the key to start, it takes maybe 10 seconds before it starts and it just sounds so bad that it takes so many turns to start it then!

Anyone experienced the same???

I no longer have a TDI but never had this problem. Have you tried a different dealer? You may be better off to take your car to a VW Diesel specialist. I know that a MKVII is covered but I find some dealers are good and some are stealers.
Best of luck getting your Golf starting properly.

I actually got sick of it starting badly

when starting it on cold, its 50/50 chance that it will start first turn or it might take loads and loads of turns.

even now it +18 degree it does the same, so brought the car back to the garage and not taking it back till its fixed,

every other time the used to say there is no problem, but the did an update so it might fix, but now iv videos of it starting and they have seen it!

so ill keep it updated on whats going to happen or whats the problem....

Does sound like the glo plugs are not always operating, I know on my sons Citreon xsara the glo plug light comes on when the weather is v cold BUT the glo plugs actually stay on for about the first 30 seconds of running without the dash glo plug light illuminating to 'aid better cold running' according to the book!

Record the sequence on your phone showing dash with lights out, temp gauge. When you take it into the stealer ask to speak with mechanic that will be looking at your car and show him (or her!) the footage........they then can't deny there is a prob but obviously the issue is replicating it but it's a start. Good luck.

Also, thought current VW Diesel engines don't start despite turning the ignition key until the glow plug sequence has completed?

The thing is, glow plug stayed ON for good few second, like it would in -5 or colder, and yet it didnt start when temperature outside was +18!!! it took ages for it to start.
So im confused with it now,
Everything is recorder and shown to the garage and car spend 3 days in the garage and not one did it do it, started first turn for them.
They took all the engine parameters when its starting and running and they sent it off to VW and ment to get bk to me soon.

Its now a week since i got the car bk and hadnt had a problem starting it.

well at least i recorded and showed it to them, they at least wont think that im making this up or crazy in the head.

going to wait and see what comes bk from the VW

Did the starter turn like it should with out loading up and slowing down ?
When it did start was there ANY white OR black smoke ?
Did it run properly straight after it did start ?
