GTI to Golf R?

So I just searched across the entire country for gti autobahn and golf r in the 2016-2017 range. With similar mileage the price difference is about 6k. Hard to compare directly, but that's also about the price difference when new, considering the golf R didn't have as many rebates to bring the price down as the gti did.

However, the other gti trims, like the s would have been a far better value since like you're saying they could have been had for 24k and now they're around 15k. Meh, I still like my sunroof and fender audio enough that it doesn't matter 🙃.

Yes you are right, I actually documented the rarity of the Mk7 Rs in the US DM...

There is 11,340 MK7 Rs (~3,800 avg/yr) and 8,884 MK7.5 Rs.... (~3,000 avg/yr)

As opposed to the MK6 Rs, which they made just 5,492 of in just 2 years (~2,750 avg/yr)

View attachment 210611

If you disregard Golfs, around 13% of MK7s were Golf R Mk7s and about 18% of MK7.5s are Rs (NOT COUNTING 2021 when the R was discontinued)

On the other hand the MK6....

View attachment 210612

If you disregard Golfs.... 35,116 MK6 GTIs and Rs were sold in the US in 2012-2013, so around 16% of MK6s ended up being Golf Rs, a similar percentage.....

They are rare by quantity but not by model year..... they also made a lot less MK6s overall per year.... with the MK7 they really ramped up (and later died down.)

Nevertheless, if you do the same exercise for high mileage 2015-2016 MK7s, the same holds true... you can just do the KBB Value too, its around that amount.

You can scroll through it yourself.. this time I choose the east coast, DC area 300 mi for the GTI, 500 mi for the Golf R....
I did select " no accidents reported" which filters them out through car fax to not mess with the results...

I am seeing around 14-15 grand for a GTI with 80-100k miles.. while all the Golf Rs in that same mileage hover around 24-25k....

or am I crazy? too bad Corona is probably having an effect, but I was seeing similar spreads back when I was buying my car a few years ago... it hasn't changed.

do you work in data analysis? This was a pleasure to read. I like how you think. I’m going to school for data science this year so your method is impressive

Went from 2015 GTI Autobahn w/ PP to 2018 R. MT for both. Enjoyed the GTI, but R is so much more a better car. Especially with the digital dashboard on the 18. Only real negative difference was the turning radius, but really not a big deal. Miss the sunroof a little, but again not a big deal.

I sat in the ID.4 a couple weeks ago which has the same haptic feedback buttons as the MK8. They felt like the home button on a cell phone from a couple years ago when they removed the physical button. Very artificial and slow. Working through menus / making adjustments, especially while driving, seems like it's going to be cumbersome. Total drawback if you ask me. Deal breaker in my book. I'll more than likely spring for an RS3 if I do get another car.
Agreed. I love touchscreens, but only when I have the ability to look directly at them when I'm interfacing with them. When it comes to operating devices without looking at them, physical interfaces are still the way to go. It's great that touchscreens give us the option to have tons of menus inside of a small footprint, but they are a pain to use when you're trying to pay attention to the road.

Outside of the buttons, how did you like the ID.4?

Yeah man when I restarted my car hunt for a MK7 and realized I should say fuck it and get the R.... I had the biggest grin in my face when I was leaving the dealership, i couldn't believe it was happening, it was supposed to be my dream car.

I kind of controlled myself and decided not to mod anything (save for little things) until the warranty was up, it just ended a few months ago and I'm finally buying all the stuff.... finally, again, cant believe its happening..... I already snapped up an Unitronic DP during their sale.....

Well you could say that haha but its more just working in a small business (wholesale/logistics) that moves a lot of inventory and does need to look a large data and make decisions....

Don't care about the tach an speed, but nice to be able to have Nav in front of you or album covers, etc...
I’m sure VCDS can allow you to watch porn on these digital dashes. Soon, a group called MAJD will pop up - Mothers Against Jacking and Driving.

Came across a 2019 that already has stage 2 upgrades but it’s listed as a rebuilt title. How are these cars as rebuilds? Good idea, or run away? The price is about $8K lower than a no accident compatible without mods.

Rebuilt... do you have any information as per the details of the “rebuild?” I ask mostly because 2019’s got a new ECU with new software that had stalling issues for the first 1/3-1/2 of the model year. A lot of owners got buybacks i. This time because it was such a common occurrence that could only be resolved by software, and it took VW 4-6 months to arrive at an effective fix for the stalling.

if the reason this is a “rebuilt” title is something to do with the lemon law buyback, I would buy it if you were confident you’d drive it to 100K+ miles. If you think you might sell it sooner then it’s a bad idea because nobody wants a 3-owner rebuilt title lol

I’m still waiting to hear back on what the damage was. Just curious in general if these cars hold up to rebuilds or if they’re nothing but problems after an accident...

I have owned rebuilt tile cars before and all is great until you want to sell it, then it will be a very difficult task to get anywhere what your asking with a rebuilt title, Just from my experience.

All cars are nothing but problems after an accident, depending on where the damage was.

I wrecked my first MK7 GTI w/ 1764 miles on the odometer going too fast on a highway exit on stock tires, careened into the curb. Full F+R suspension, control arms, axles, ball joints, subframe etc. you name it, it was replaced.

the car drove like a bag of dicks until I traded it in at the end of the lease. So glad I made that fateful mistake on a lease and not a car I actually owned.

adter the repair work was done the steering wheel felt like a fisher price toy and there was lots of wheel hop/torque steer on stock power WOT, even with upgraded tires. Had the drivers side ball joint replaced twice, some other work done all under warranty (despite the issues being fallout from my accident). Nothing ever fixed it.

I would never buy a rebuild.
