GTD Engine rattle

Hi Guys,

Newbie to the GTD world.

Just picked up a late 2017 GTD DSG estate with 76k on the clock and there seems to be a high pitched kinda rattle/chirping coming from the left hand side of the engine as you look from the front on tick over.

It goes when you rev it.

Is it a drive belt of some sort?

Someone said they all sound like that but i test drove a couple of others and dont remember hearing it, but then i wasnt really looking tbh!

Cheers!

This is normal on TDI's from 2013 and up (EA288 and EA288Evo). Dealers have some TSB's for this, depending from engine code and model year, it could be from timing belt change (sometimes with pulley), to just "greasing" the belt with special anti-friction spray). 3rd option is to just live with this

I guess now there is a modified belt and pulley? It was changed at the main dealers at around 46k

Just been digging around and it sounds like it could potentially be the alternator pulley.

More like "what to change (belt, pulley, belt + pulley) if belt is made by x and pulley made by y to alleviate sound".

Take auxiliary belt off and start the engine to check it that's the case

VW in one of the TSB's uses G 052 172 M2 grease for noisy timing belt. Loosen the timing top cover to be able to put the nozzle of the grease, start the engine and spray these grease on top of timing belt for few seconds, wait few seconds, then spray again, stop the engine for 10-15min. Start again and repeat the greasing, stop the engine, put the timing cover back.

I wont be dong any of it, as i am totally incapable so there is a specialist not far from me who i may pay a visit to.

Would a bad alternator pulley affect battery charging? Reason i ask is that there are also signs of a potential bad battery. I will left the bonnet and do the relevant tests to see what its voltage is running and not running, but wondered if the two could be linked?

Could be, but in such cases, you get something like "no charging, stop the car" message on dash caused by defective clutch in alternator pulley.

Reason i ask is that there are also signs of a potential bad battery.

If is original 7 years battery, most probably is just age sign and needs to be replaced or maybe just charging outside the car, as "inteligent battery management" is not so inteligent ;) and re-coding ("virtual change of battery") in gateway, as these battery management takes age of battery into the account and "plays too safe", so old battery but charged like fresher battery potentially could last a little bit more

Yeah thats the thing. Just digging around on Youtube it seems that sometimes the pulley/clutch can fail but still work.

And i dont think the battery is orignal, maybe its second one? It looks old and is grey in colour but the labels have all peeled off, so i cant see a date or anything.

Either way, it s probably well overdue for a new one so i am gong to replace that rather than risk it!

Originals have black top, so some aftermarket stuff

so i cant see a date or anything.
Some (OEM) have week/year stamped on negative terminal, but most of aftermarket have it stamped on the side of the top cover. But problem without knowledge who made this battery is in "date coding", as various manufacturers have different "codes" for manufacture date

plus EML is lit on the dash.
So, if you have CEL, what error you have stored?

'm told it is the Camshaft set that needs replacing

Any other ideas, costs etc?

You have car diagnosed by shop, so what do you want from us? That our crystal balls are better in diagnosing than a shop that had a possibility to work on the car?
