GTD - 62 MPG...

I drove back from Widnes, Cheshire to Reading yesterday. When the traffic was around 50/60mph I was getting 53mpg. When I went up to 70+ it went down to around 50mpg. That's with 6k miles on the clock using adaptive cruise control in normal driving mode. Never used eco mode myself as a few people said they didn't notice a difference to mpg.

It is interesting. The modes themselves don't make a difference, just pressing the button doesn't suddenly produce better mpg.

The different modes change how the car responds and reacts so it's best that you adapt the driving as well. For example, put it in Eco and drove it hard and the MPG will still be lower. Accept that it changes the throttle response and the gearing and drive accordingly and then, yes you might see a improvement. I've conducted that experiment on a long stretch of 50 mph B road near me. Eco mode only makes a difference if I drive using and working with the changes Eco mode makes (if that makes sense)

Yes it was a 5 mile run across Exeter. So cheating really and no stop starting.

I don't use Eco mode as a rule

X2 Eco run, as in driving light footed. Always in normal, with the occasional steering set to sport.

Ouch....

I don't know what's worse the mpg or that they've fitted a 1980's lcd display.

(Just kidding)

Because you are UK based so its set up that way?!! ;) It's in the Units display, either Litres, or UK or US MPG...

I've had over 70 a couple of times when I was in Germany this year, steady 70 on the autobahns and staying in the speed limits when off them...

Hmm US and UK gallon is not the same. So essentilly 64.5 mpg UK is 53.7 mpg US... :) perhaps this is calculated by the MFA. I use liters so cannot say

Bear in mind that the figure on the display is not all that accurate, I use Fuelly and so far my average has been 53.5, recently with the warm weather it's been around 58 though the display show just over 60!

Mine is fairly consistently within a couple of mpgs, normally within 1. Your car is a lower range model meaning your computer must be inferior ;-)

Cheek! It's an SE so not that much lower... ;) I've found that using Fuelly (or similar) gives a much more accurate reading for MPG, there are too many variables at fill up time that can easily make a difference of several MPG...

Winner, winner. Chicken Dinner:D:D:D

You are the winner - that must have been a painful drive. lol

I would say that the major difference I have noticed is not just that MPG has improved but it seems to recover quicker - it that makes sense

Possibly that's in my mind.

Fundamentally a tank lasts me two weeks - so £55 over two weeks and only tax and insurance to pay on the car - I really can't complain.
