Got a bad turbo? Let's track the issue...

Hello everyone! I thought it would be a good idea to track what's happening with the exploding turbos thing.

So, if it happened to you, could you please post here and share with us:

- Were you stock? If not, what did you had? Piggyback? APR Remap? Revo Remap? Anything else?

- How many miles/km's on the clock? And if you were modded, how many miles you ran with it before the problem happened?

- What turbo revision did you had? R, Q, K, T, etc... US GTI or ROW GTI?

- Did VCDS give any errors before it happened, it happened all of sudden, what exactly happened?

Let's see if we catch a pattern here. If you had this issue, please contribute!

Thanks everyone!

Awesome info, thanks Arin!

Oddly, we had a case in brazil that the turbo went kaput with 16.000kms in the odometer. It's the first I saw that didn't happen with low miles on the clock.

I found to my horror yesterday, that my R has a 145 702N Turbo. That's Revision 2 according to Arin's compiled tables.

I suspect that only a small percentage of the total pool is failing.

My question is that if we drive the car and turbo for a sufficient amount of time without failure, is it safe to say that it is less likely to fail over all, or are we all doomed to having this Sword of Damocles hanging over our heads in perpetuity??

Are there fewer failures in Rs compared to the GTi Turbos?

I think the R's are failing more than the GTI's.

Nobody answered telling that their turbo exploded. I'm beginning to think that nobody here in this forum had any issues with their turbo?

I have a "702 R" turbo that's been stage 1 for about 2000 miles, no issues so far.

Well I suspect I'm one of the turbo's (T) that have failed, so it's going in to the dealer asap.
***Turned out to be just a loose clamp!!! :)
