GOLF R MK7 driving mode cycle selection

Hi,

Hoping if someone could lead me in the right direction regarding my situation.

I've got a early model GOLF R MK7 (2014) which does not cycle through the driving modes when you press the driving mode button.

I know this feature is on other GOLF MK7 models, even models as early as 2014 but later build date.

My question is - how do I go about enabling this function that allows me to cycle through the driving modes?

I've already tried upgrading my MIB1 firmware to the latest with no change.

Would this be a BCM / gateway upgrade?

Many thanks.

@killagorillR : Hi.

I'm confused!! Does this car have a driving mode button as factory built - it's not clear (to me, at least) from your words? If the answer is "no", then I suspect that the answer to your question is that the task is NOT a simple coding matter, alas!

ASAIK, the driving mode facility on MQB platform cars is what's called "Software As Product" (SAP) - which means that the function needs a special license (called a "FEC") that's tailored to the car's VIN in an encrypted part of the car's software.

If this car does NOT have a driving mode button as factory installed - it's unlikely to have the required FEC license (notwithstanding that the car may have coding enabled that supports driving mode). Officially at least, SAP facilities must be purchased from dealers.

I'm more than happy to be advised by others if my understanding above is incorrect!

@DV52 Donny! We meet again brother. Hope all is well with you and the family.

My Golf R MK7 from factory has got driving modes, I want the ability to press the mode button to cycle through the modes such as Comfort, Race, Individual etc.

A bit of context on why I want this function - I installed an aftermarket android head unit which has very limited ability to switch driving modes (I can only chose Normal, Eco and individual).

I followed the below guide from a fellow member - Hal. He essentially created a Y harness and tapped into the canbus wires on the factory MIB unit. I have taken this a step further and have the factory screen in my glove box which I use to change my driving modes.

I would like the ability to cycle through the driving modes to eliminate the need for me to reach over to my glove box and change the modes by pressing the screen.

I hope this makes sense!

Looking into the same thing. I have custom steering wheel with he Audi R8 Buttons, Id rather hit the drive button on the steering wheel a few times to cycle through the modes instead of pressing the button and then having to press the mode on the screen.

@killagorillR : Arrhh....... yes, we have spoken before (now I remember)!! G'day cobber!

I'm not familiar with your "modification", but having the factory screen in the glove box as a second display is an interesting option!!

I'm not sure why the pressing the driving mode button isn't being registered. But since the overall function is working OK via the old MIB screen in the glove box, I suspect (guess really) that for some reason the car might no longer be aware that the button is installed, maybe?

The drive-module button ("E598" in the wiring diagram) is directly connected to the BCM - the module @ address 09 on the CAN network.

For older style BCMs that have an active long-code string - there are 2 software switches that tell the module that the car has this button installed as follows:
  • Byte 15, Bit 5 ="ECO" button installed
  • Byte15, Bit 6 = Additional Coding - Drive Selection button LED (1=LED installed, 0=no LED)
There is also another software switch for the Drive mode button on the Gateway module as follows:
  • Byte 8, Bit 6 = FPA_taster_auswertung (1=rising slope on curve, 0=dropping slope)
I'm less clear about this further software switch- but FPA=FahrProfilAuswahl=Drive Profile Selection.

So, the descriptor for the Gateway long-code switch translates to:
FPA_taster_auswertung=Drive Profile Selection_button_evaluation

My suggestion is that you check the status of these long-code switches on this car - you might need to experiment with different combinations?

@DV52 Thank you for your wisdom as always.

My driving mode button works fine, it's just that I have to make my mode selection on the MIB screen after pressing the mode button.

Whereas, Ideally I would like to continuously press the driving mode button to have it cycle through the modes and eventually land on the one I want.

I've read that others have this behavior on later GOLF MK7 models, I think because mine is a earlier build it wasn't implemented from the factory.

I'm hoping that it's just a coding change and not a BCM upgrade for example.

When I get to my computer I'll look through the driving profile dataset, which is stored in the gateway. Without making this too long that data set holds all the settings for the various driving modes, and also for how the button behaves.

The datasets I can look at will be for newer gateways than yours so not respect I won't be helpful. But I'm about 95% sure that there is a setting for whether or not pressing the button more times (after the first, which brings up the driving modes on the screen) will cycle through the modes.

Assuming my memory of the later data sets is correct it's possible that data sets early on were not set this way (or possibly the setting didn't exist). I've not been in an early Mk7 so no first hand experience unfortunately.

Also on the assumption that nothing changed when you went to the aftermarket unit I would suspect your coding is okay. I can say with relative certainties that abcm would not be the "fix" as the BCM just get say momentary ground when the button is pressed. As @DV52 mentioned the BCM needs to know the button is there. And can be coded for the presence (or not) of the orange LED that's in the button. If you are getting the screen to pop up when you press the button the BCM is taking care of its relatively minor part in the driving mode system.

I had to cut a lot of this post out. This was a short as I could make it 🤣

@Cuzoe Thanks for your input champ!
So going off what you've said, there is a chance that I will need to upgrade my gateway to achieve what I want.

I've also looked into the mqb driving modes tool found here :
https://www.golfmk7.com/forums/index.php?threads/driving-profiles-modification-tool.417429/
But unfortunately my gateway (5Q0907530F) isn't able to take advantage of this as it's an older gateway.

Perhaps this is the same case for reprogramming the behaviour of the driving mode button?
