As some of you have probably run into the Prop Shaft aka driveshaft aka “Cardan Shaft” needs to be removed for downpipe installations or a number of other maintenance/modification jobs.

Just the front be decoupled for some, but in the case of my Baun Performance 4” GESI catted DP & Midpipe the entire prop shaft needs to be removed from the car due to the massive size.

As always, I recommend using FCP euro so your hardware is covered by their lifetime warranty so I’ll include the links for the required replacement hardware below as well as the OEM torque specs.

Front coupler bolts (qty 3).

OEM PN: N 90846102
Size: M10x30
Torque Spec: 50NM +90* additional turn.
(50NM = 37ft lbs)

You may also need to unbolt the lower transmission mount hardware to gain enough clearance to R&R the prop shaft. There are several different bolts that can come into play with that task, and depending on if you’re planning to swap some of those parts while you’re at it different parts my come into play.

Personally my recommendation is always to use a upgraded “dog bone insert” from BFI I’ll link below. The factory “dog bone mount” or arm itself is a engineered weak point to prevent damage to the cast aluminum transmission case in the event of extreme wheel hop or outside damage to the car.

There are two versions so take the time to check your car! Also, two different densities of this mount are available. Stage 1 being more forgiving and stage 2 transmitting more NVH. Apply common sense with how you use the car and your tolerance for NVH here.

Things that are appropriate to say on the GolfMK7 forums and in a low budget porno: You can't just slide it in like normal due to it's massive size!

Any suggestions on what to do if somebody didn’t mark the front of the shaft properly before removal and now it’s kicking on high rpm downshifts and reverse? Asking for a friend of course :)

Sounds like he should double check if;

-The carrier bearing is misaligned

-The dog bone mount isn’t properly installed

-both flanged mating surfaces are fully seated/properly torqued

To Jake or anyone else that can answer:

The lower tranmission mount is the same as the dog bone mount, correct?

I have BFI stage 1 engine and transmission mounts I want to install this weekend. I also will be installing a downpipe in the upcoming months.

Will I be able to remove the prop shaft completely if I install BFI mounts? I'm fine with removing the dog bone mount but don't want to mess with the other two BFI mounts.

Lower transmission mount = dogbone mount

It’ll definitely be easier to R&R the prop shaft with OEM mounts in place (to allow the required movement)

Is it going to cause me headaches completely removing the prop shaft with BFI mounts installed?

Most likely. Its one of those things that’s easier with two people to begin with.

The prop shaft slips over pins on each end, so it cannot come out even without any hardware installed unless one end if the powertrain is rocked out of the way (engine being the easiest).

BFI mounts by design and purpose limit driveline movement, so it would be about impossible.
