It is my turn to deal with this five speed failure garbage. I will be posting here of my experience on the six speed swap. I’m no master technician but if any of you have questions I’ll be happy to help. The 6 speed swap starts now!!😁

So I Sourced the six speed manual transmission from a 2016 GTI from a automotive recycling place. Apparently it had rear end damage which totalled out the vehicle and had 5000 km on the dash. I paid C$1100 for this transmission. Pretty good deal but the problem is they did not use Vin numbers they just base it off the year make and model so they told me that these 2016 transmissions fit and I knew it so I said that’s fine. Once I picked up the transmission I noticed the transfer case on the side. And looking at it it was not the transfer case it was the electronica LSD from the performance pack GTI‘s. So I said screw it and I took the transmission home knowing it wasn’t gonna work at least that’s what I thought. I thought I could take out the LSD and use the flange on the LSD to insert it in the transmission and it would work the same way but the problem is the flange goes straight through the LSD and I would need to source in a new flange to put it into the transmission and it was just going to be too much of a hassle so I would’ve returned it to get the transmission I’m looking for. So I called the dealership and ask them if I just used a passenger axle from a performance pack GTI will the transmission work as a normal transmission with the LSD unplug and he said yes. So down the road I would try to get the LSD to work with my car but need the car to work right now To go to school.

some pictures of the transmissions.

Nice, that's 6 speed swap number 3 that I've seen on the 1.8. I think this might become the new IS20 swap eventually. Also, I believe the way the LSD works is with hydraulically pressurized clutch packs, so if it's not plugged in it'll work just fine as an open diff (just added weight :/).

Did you ever get your gear display working correctly?

No, but with the updated APR tune it's no longer running lean or at low boost, so I just don't look at the display any more.

That's awesome - I hope it goes well!

Will need to do some more searches to find the other 2 swaps.

Would there be any major benefits from using the 6-speeds in the newer golf/Sportwagens vs. the GTI?

I wasn't aware that the newer golfs had 6 speeds. It would depend on if the 6 speed is a MQ250 or MQ350. The MQ350 is what the GTI uses and it's important for holding more power. Considering the golf has a 1.4l now, I'm not hopeful that they use the MQ350.

I was looking and I see that the 6 speeds paired with the 1.4’s looks like the similar housing as our 5 speeds. So I’m assuming that they can’t handle power like the 5 speeds but I could be wrong. But it’s definitely not a MQ350. Maybe they made this transmission because the 1.4 lacks torque so they may be put the gear ratio closer I dont know.

Yea, I bet they're 6 speed MQ250's. Europe has had 6 speed MQ250's I think since the mk7 launch.

All parts came in today. The stage 2 fly wheel for the mk7 Gti has the same starter ring gear as the stock 1.8 fly wheel. So I hope the starter will work. Parts manger at VW say it should but we’ll find out. Going to start installing everything tonight and tomorrow. Hopefully get It finished tomorrow.
