Gas gauge seems way off

Today while I was idling in a parking lot for a little bit, my car said I had 20 miles left. It sputtered and died and wouldn't restart. Luckily my buddy had a 5 gallon gascan, so I poured that in and this is what my gauge is now showing...

This is the second time it's done this as well, I'm using to getting 260-270 miles a tank and lately I've been filling up over 300 miles, so what's going on? I did stop speeding so much, but now I'm wondering if my gauge is off and that's why my car is dying when it says there's 20 miles left.

Well, it seemed better for awhile so I thought maybe it was just in my head, but today while idling at work I heard a pop and about 10 minutes later my gas gauge started plummeting. I don't see anything leaking and I don't know wtf is going on.

What am I inspecting for? I have no idea what I should look at that would indicate an issue.

I'll try pulling it tonight if/when I get home. It's weird that I heard the pop and only have 217 miles on this tank of gas (usually get 270) and after I let it sit awhile the gauge was back to normal.

I mainly don't know what would make that popping sound. I thought someone threw something at my car.

If the float is binding on something and released it could make a popping noise

Ok, I'll see if I can get to the gas station nearby just to make sure I have plenty of gas and then check it out once I get home. Thanks.

Perfect, just what I need. Thank you.

I made it home and back to work with no issues, didn't get a chance to look at the pump yet because of storms last night.
