First attempt at long exposure

These shots were my first attempt at long exposure. I was down in Florida for a wedding and didn't have my tripod. I tried to just rest the camera on the bag then hopped for the best.

looks ok, but you NEED a tripod to take long exposures.

definitely need to invest in a tripod...or if u have one...try not to touch the camera when you're taking the photos...and cant tell if the first photo is grainy or just shaken...if pics end up grainy, turn down ISO settings

Its camera shake iso was set at 100. I have a tripod but I left it at home thinking I wouldn't need it and it was pretty much impossible to stop the bag from moving. I am happy given it was a 30" exposure with not tripod but now I know that I should take my tripod with me next time I travel

I don't know the EXIF data but next time. Try dropping the F stop of you have a fast enough lens to about f2.8 and mess around with the iso and use a tripod.

My guess is its a kit lens so it will lose a lot of sharpness at a low f stop. If he has a tripod is shouldn't matter put the f-stop between 8-12 and then adjust the aperture speed. Keep ISO as low as possible. I would recommend picking up a remote for your camera or when doing long exposures setting the timer so that you can press the button and let go before it actually takes the picture which will help reduce camera shake.

I have a kit lens for my D40 and it still takes sharp pics. He just needs a little more practice.

I have the same lens on my D5000 and when the f-stop is set below 8 you can see the degradation in sharpness, which was the point I was making.

when aperture is at F5.6

the lens was a 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6. The ISO was 100 focal length 28mm exposure 30 seconds and f/22. I did use a timer but I think I hit the bag a few times.

f stop is to high at 22 in that situation.
