If that is real engine noise I wonder how they pick it up? It's obviously filtered, I wish it really sounded that meaty, on the outside.

As it has been stated, the sound is not an amplifier of the engine noise.
It is not a recorded sound.
It is a vibrator, similar to your phone.
It makes mid range sound only.

In UK they do have exhaust units that can be installed that play sound inside the exhaust. With this you can have a GTI that sounds like and F1 car.

I'm sorry to keep this circle going, but it is not a vibration device like on a cel phone.
I though that is what it was myself, some kind of rattle can.
It's a speaker.

Perhaps I'm going deaf or I am used to it, but I don't hear anything cruising on the highway other than typical roadnoise. I think I am going to disconnect it this weekend to see what it's like.
