ECU Swap?

Hello again. I am afraid I am back as the problem with car going into limp mode persists.

My son tried two independent VW specialists. After looking at the ODIS report, one refused to get involved, saying it could be anything!

Other had a look, and came to same conclusions as me!

Problem is almost certainly loosing the 5V reference for sensors. All sensors connected have been replaced (with a mix of new and used parts) and fault remains.

wiring loom has been inspected, and no issues found.

So this leads to a possible ECU fault.

I have seen an ECU set on eBay for £250 eBay ECU, so want to try swapping this out (If it doesn't work I can re-sell and get money back).

What exactly is involved with an ECU swap?

What do I need to look out for with a used ECU. What part numbers are critical?

If I go back to original will the mileage be affected.

Anyone done this job and give some insight as to how difficult it is.

Mainly just want to diagnose if fault is in ECU or not.

Thanks

ECU's are coded to the car via the CAN gateway if I remember..so it might not even work...& may thro up loads of other errors which will involve coding out with access to the VW FAZIT system I think...

You might be better off raising a question on the Ross-tech forums if you have a ross-tech scan (VCDS)

I dont use VCDS, I use ODIS. Was basically free as I already had a VAS5054.

Often if you change a group of modules, the car will take on the new identity and will work fine (New VIN number) It is just being sure that whatever I try is fully reversible if it doesnt work. Clutching at straws at moment......

I will do a bit of searching around on the internet and see if I can get any more information.
