I have had my 1.4 SE FOR 3 weeks and about 650 mls.. Generally pleased and beginning to enjoy driving it, though there was quite a period of adaption after a manual diesel Yeti.
However, I seem to get significant tyre noise/roar on all but the smoothest of roads. Particularly intrusive at speed, probably made more noticeable by the overall uncanny quietness of the car. Question is, is this the nature of the car, the roughness of my North Yorkshire roads or are the tyres to blame?
Would be interested to hear of others with the same tyres and their experience?

Definitely the tyres, i had them on my car and Dunlop's are generally noisy especially the so called performance tyres. I also found that the road noise from the tyres was very intrusive. You'll get used to it and when the time comes to replace them just get a quieter tyre like a Michelin, Pirelli or Continental.

Hope this helps:)

As I've not had that specific Dunlop tyre on mine I can't really comment on noise levels for that tyre.

I do have Dunlop Sport Maxx fitted and I notice they are still quiet even after 22K miles on my Mk7.
These are fitted as OEM on the Maseratti Quattro Sport.

The noisiest tyres from my experience has been Bridgestone Potenzas.

As always tyres choice is very subjective..

If you look on www.blackcircles.com or any of the other tyre sites and find your size of tyre then they list most manufacturers and noise levels for each model of tyre, which now have some sort of standard test. I imagine this gives a reasonable indication. Certain tyres are good in one size and not as good in another, so it is difficult to generalise.

As per vwman, Potenzas (fitted to a Mazda 3 in my case) seemed very noisy, to the extent that I almost considered swapping them before they were "down to the canvas".
