looks like the dpf is a the rear of the engine, but the fans are at the front.

Yes but both fans cool the engine bay down. The dpf gets much much hotter than ever before with it being closer so I would suspect it needs cooled down via the fans.

To trigger a dpf regen the ecu calls for an extra squirt of diesel on the exhaust stroke. This burns increasing the temp of the exhaust gas thus generating extra heat in the whole exhaust system not just the dpf. The fans run to keep the sensitive bits in engine bay cool
