DPF/Overheating issue?

Picked up my new Golf 1.6 SE today, drove about 60 miles home and when I turned the car off the engine fan was still running for a good 5-10 mins and the car smelt like it was on fire. Does anyone have a clue what this could possibly be? I have been trying to get hold of the dealer but they are now shut.

Thanks for any help!

Hi Tom,

It is the DPF, mine did it twice on the first day and got me worried...

I spoke to the dealer who said it was normal, now had the car nearly two months and it has only done it one more time,

same happened to me lol, thought the car was going to blow up it was at loud. dies down after a few mintues then cuts off once the dpf is cooled enough but it can take a good 5-10 mintues depending how hot it gets. scared the life of me the first time too, I know it had one and what it did but didnt think the fans would be that loud. my neighbor even came in and told me my car was still running and had to explain to him what it was. havent heard it from then as it was a new car and I was taking her easy so assume it needed it for the first time to clear it.

dont worry about, now you know what it is :):):)

Thanks both, now I will be able to sleep tonight lol. My guess is that the DPF was trying to regen and I come home at the wrong time lol, even though I didn't expect a regen so early on :S

My 2.0tdi/GT/150/dsg did an excessive number of regens in the first 1000 miles. It got up to 3 in one day! Ruined the mpg. Seems to be doing less now. (3400m)
Talked at length to VW and VW dealers, who said that it was normal. I translated "normal" to mean that they didn't give a flying **** and did not want to know.
I took it to a dealer at about 1000 miles and they "said" that they had checked it out and there was nothing wrong.

it really does affect your mpg, was doing a nice first long drive and when the regen kicked in it lowered mines from 75 to 68. but im happy 68 was still amazing to be honest. mines was the same as you haveing a few at the start but I think its cause never drove her for long or that hard as it was brand new and getting used to it.

if the regen doesnt get to finish it will attempt another regen once the cars at the ideal conditions again for a few times. maybe you should of took her a good blast down the motorway to do a full regen, that might of stopped so many regens. you must of had three as the car didnt get to do a full regen each time, it trys for 15 mintues I think each attempt before it gives up but my understanding is it throws more fuel in to get the right temperature in the dpf. a good blast down the motorway for 10 mintues touching near 2k revs does mines nicely for a good while.

Don't know if anyone can help me on this but.... I was never told about the whole dpf usage rules etc at point of sale and I'm kind of ****** off that I wasn't told. If I knew I would have got the 1.4 petrol. I don't start my new job until Aug so I'm not going to be giving the car a good run each day and sometimes I will be doing just short trips for food shopping etc etc. How is this going to affect the dpf? When I start my new job I will be driving around 15 miles to work and 15 back, the journey consists of A and B roads with no motorway driving, would this be ideal time for a dpf regen and keep everything healthy?

Thanks for any advice.

you should of been told about it mate, but some dealers just want a sale. it used to be that dpf cars where said to be fine in towns, the rover city car for example. untill people bought the dpf one and found out if you dont do regens then it breaks and costs £1000 up wards for a new one.

I only do city driveing and every now and again a weekend trip on A and B roads and mines does regens fine, ive got near 3000 on the clock now. my mate has a passet that he only drives in town and rarely motorway, once in a blue moon he would drive on the motorway. hes had it now 4 years and hasnt had a dpf light on yet. I think they have tryed to make them town friendly by throwing more fuel in to get the temperature to burn off the soout in the dpf. as long as you do decent drives every now and again maybe once a month you do your drive to work, if your doing that drive every day then I reckon you should be fine.

when I read up on it the advice was to drive at 2k revs for 10 mintues to do a full regen, but that was after the light comes on to warn about the dpf being full. I normally clear mines doing 60 mph on the back roads every other weekend while driveing to a trip out for the kids. im sure if there are any specialists about the topic will be able to go into greater detail for you.

Thanks for the reply, sounds like I should be ok then. Just gives me an excuse to take it for a fun drive in the country:p

Will be calling into the dealer on Monday to talk to a manager, I feel like I was mis-sold the car. Going to try and make them replace it with a 1.4

first thing my dealer asked me when I wanted the tdi was, would you take it for at least a long drive every now and again. to which I told her I would do a 30 mile trip at least once a month and asked why. she started to explain the dpf and I told her I already know but grateful she made sure to ask that I did. all new diseal cars have them now to meet eu standards on emission, also to get lower tax bands which appeal to buyers. its bit annoying that your dealer never asked if you knew about it and to weither the car suited you, its dealers like that still selling these cars to O.A.P looking a car to drive few mile to the shops or appointments. thats when you get probelms with clogged dpf's.

although you should be fine but if I was you id have a talk with the dealer that sold you it. ask them if your driveing would be fine and insure the car, sounds to me though youll be ok and have a excuse to get away now lol. need your head showered just tell the miss it has to be done the dealer told me if I see this to take her a drive lol.

I will just take the car up to the national park for a "sunday drive" that will get the engine hot enough for sure!

I will be having words with the guy who sold me it, but I have a feeling he's just going to fob me off and if he does then I will be pressing for some action from his manager or directly from vw. Not sure what I want yet but I sure do want something seems I have practically been ripped off. And upon thinking I'm sure he didnt tell me it as I orderd the car towards the end of the month..... 1 easy sale to meet his targets maybe?
