DIY MIB1 to MIB2 Infotainment Conversion (Part 1)

Had my system programmed by Jack today, nice and simple. As everyone else has said, upgrade is so worth it. I haven't even tried app-connect yet and I'm happy with it. My USB port has been "out for delivery" for 2 days.

Was it work when Jack was available but played around a little when I got home. Anybody know how to change the vehicle type (and/or what to change it to) in order to get the red highlighted interface. Currently it is blue, not sure what variant my unit came from. It also has a "think blue" vehicle page, will see what it shows on my drive to work in the morning since I'm in a TDI.

In any case, extremely happy with the upgrade. Huge thanks to Jack and to everybody that's been posting info/experiences in this thread.

vehicle type is changeable in the long code. Start up screen/vehicle display theme is listed in 5F->Coding 07-> Long Code Helper -> Byte 18.

I recommend finding Xagico's dossier on VCDS coding (google search xagico, he posts on golfmk7 and a few other forums). Page 58 and pg 59 has the different screen options. Bit 0 and Bit 1 checked = GTI; Bit 1 and Bit 2 checked = Golf

Thanks. I will look it up and make the changes. I saved my coding for installing the new unit and I remember seeing it now that I'm thinking about it.

This morning when I got in the car I actually caught the startup screen, GTE, which explains the blue. The blue motion trainer actually works, although I have no idea what a blue score is.

I suppose all of these "performance" screens are just displaying cann bus info. What are the chances of getting performance monitor from the GTI when I make the change? Anybody get lucky?

I want to say I first reached out towards the end of the week before last. I got a response on Friday. He did say he was/is on holiday though. Might still be catching up.

When he did respond he sent me a link for the VMware desktop session he wanted me to download which already has everything he needs installed. I just had to download TeamViewer and VMplayer from their respective sites. In my initial message I told him what I wanted to do, the part number of my new unit, and that I had the VAS
5054/OKI dongle. I figure it probably saves him time to know the person reaching out is ready.
I've texted Jack via Skype last week, but got no response. What is his typical response time?

The performance monitor can only be switched on by SWAP(SoftWare As a Product). You need the right FECs, otherwise it will not work.

A blue score = you drive "eco friendly". Source: I'm a GTE driver :D

I figured as much. Just wasn't sure if the blumotion trainer was also a product but I suppose it's a standard feature on the GTE. I also wonder if my TDI can ever be considered eco-friendly, no matter how I drive, haha.

I have to admit that I drive for mileage. The wheels on my car I bought off a forum member and they came with performance tires on them. As soon as they wear out I'm going back to something low rolling-resistance LOL. I want my 2ish MPG back.

I’m using that blue screen too now :) It’s so soothing :) And how can 52mpg (mfd is obdeleven tweaked so it’s pretty much spot on) on a 65mi trip not be eco friendly? That’s what I got yesterday, and it was pretty wet and rainy too.

Congratulations on the upgrade!

BTW, how do you make photos appear "in post"? I tried pasting the URL into the pop up window activated by the "Photo" button above but no luck.

The blue is okay but it doesn't match anything else in the car, which bothers me a little bit but it's going to bother my wife a lot.

I have never been able to consistently post pictures using a browser. But from the Tapatalk app it always seems to work

Hopefully by USB port arrives today. Still showing out for delivery right now, same as it showed all day yesterday.

I finished the retrofit yesterday. Jack was stellar, very patient and professional. I had some trouble finding and installing some of the software he needed (was working on my son's PC as I have a MacBook, and Win 10 is completely foreign to me) but he was more than patient and walked me through everything. There was also an initial misunderstanding on my part, as I thought any VM app will do (so I had installed VirtualBox), but he needed some specific software (VMware Player 14+Teamviewer), so that took some time too to fix.

But after that it took him less that 10min to remove CP, then probably a bit longer than 30min to install all the FeC's (wifi was decent in the garage but still dropped once), then looked for and cleared errors, we checked functionality of everything etc, all in all I spent maybe an hour in the car with the laptop connected via USB to the ODIS device plugged in the car port.

Wow, I now have an NAR 2016 GSW TDI (the car that wasn't meant to be)!

Later Edit: he also asked me to relay a message for him (and I will, even though by now most people have already learned about this). He can't work with the activation keys that people buy; he needs to go into the VW database and look for the activation key assigned to the VIN of the car your retrofitted unit came from, that's the key he buys and re-assigns to your VIN. I suppose that's how he can make AppConnect work for our NAR retrofits.

Congratulations! Thanks for the information on App-connect. I updated the original post section on App-connect with a link to this post.

I swapped the amp in today. With the MIB1 headunit still in, I initially had sound coming out from all speakers (before I switched the ignition on, had just pressed the infotainment button). There was something different, it sounded better than before (crisper), or maybe it was all in my head (since the stock MIB1 brain was still running the show). Then, after I switched the ignition on, I only had sound on the driver's side. I suppose this means CP was activated on the amp. Am I correct? If so, I at least know the amp is in working order (looks almost new, but it's from a junkyard so you never know).

After I also swapped the MIB2 headunit in, I have no sound whatsoever. The CP message is on the screen and there's no sound (regardless of whether the ignition is on or off). Is this normal? I thought I read I should still get sound from the driver's side.

The USB harness still hasn't arrived in the mail. Looking forward to putting that in and doing the remote session with Jack.

Glad to hear you got this all sorted.

Now that you have had time with the new MIB2 amplifier, did you find the MIB2 a significant upgrade in sound quality? I did not want to over-hype this in my initial write-up, but it was not subtle to my ears as I noticed immediately.

It is definitely noticeable. My son noticed it too right after the upgrade. The sound is crisper, more "precise". Looks like I can even crank up the bass more than before; the bass is punchier w/out hints of vibration (like it was before). I cannot compare it with a high end amp/soundbox as I am not an audio buff by any means, but it is definitely a noticeable (maybe even significant) improvement over the MIB1 amp. And I know it's the amp (and not the sound processing by the headunit) because I swapped the amps with the stock HU still in and I had sound (all speakers, could control volume too) for a few good minutes before I turned the ignition on (at which point I lost the passenger side speakers).

BTW, does anyone know how I can see my FeC's? No particular reason, just curious.

There's a youtube video with a guy (in Europe) long pressing "Menu" and getting in "Service Mode", and the FeC/SWaP info option is third down in the drop down list. I did that and can only see two options (nothing after that), and FeC/SWaP isn't one of them.

Sooo, downloaded XaGiCo's guide... looks like my radio does not have all of these options for byte 18, I can only choose the two in this screenshot. And if I enter one manually it says out of range. Anyone seen this before?

So I'm not sure what I did that was giving me the out of range. I must have typed something in accidentally. I got it to accept 03 buy manually entering it LCode2 so it now shows GTI on Startup and has a red interface. Even white would be okay but it doesn't seem to be possible. If I remove the startup screen, coding 00 I get blue again.

I'll just try not to ever look at it on start up and leave it as GTI, haha. If I go into long coding it doesn't show anything for byte 18 when I have manually entered a value in LCode2, although the system is using it.

Wonder if I need to update vcds. I'm in the parking lot with no internet right now but when I was playing with it last night I had internet and it didn't prompt me.

In any case, tracking claims my USB port arrive today so once I install that and have it working I'll post again and then leave you guys and gals alone, lol.
