Finally got around to the install and the screen will not stay on to get into the update menu. Any advice, or do I have a faulty brain box in the glove box?

Can you further elaborate on what behaviour you are seeing? Are you seeing the VW logo and then the screen goes dark or is it booting into the main interface? Have you used a scan tool to check for fault codes?

I get the splash screen w/VW logo, boots into radio & shows component protection. I hold down the menu button to get into the update menu it reboots. Happens about 3-4 times then just stays on black screen. Can grab fault codes with VCDS tomorrow, but not super familiar with the VCDS software yet.

UPDATE: Sorry for the delay, been hectic working on other vehicles. The headunit was indeed shot, replaced it with a diff unit and now no issues getting C&D to update system.

FINAL UPDATE: Everything is in and works - a few pieces of advice for anyone reading with troubles that has made it this far -

1) Buy the uGreen that is linked in the first post by Drewpul - I bought a supposed usb2 -> RJ45 and it did NOT work, picked up linked on and no issues
2) Check out the list of adaptations by brentgti (HERE) - I bought a brain box from a Fender car and had no sound, once I switched byte11 to internal everything works as it should

THANK YOU ALL for the help, great DIY & upgrade for anyone considering it. All in ran about 250 to get the 8" glass screen & a carlinkit 5 wireless adapter.

So i am waiting on odbeleven to arrive, and also a wiring harness as it seems my green usb connector doesn't have the extra two pins on top or anything purple.. or unless I am missing something?

Also, i ran the Congo and Duke script and I can now see app-connect, but there is only MirrorLink which has me a bit worried... as the C&O guide says, I can add carplay and AA via odbeleven right? :(

Where did you source your USB port from? What year Golf did it come off of?

What is the part number of the unit? Not all MIB2 units support App Connect (Android Auto and CarPlay). For example, 3Q0035819 units do not support App Connect.

My USB port is part 5Q0035726E from Aliexpress. It has the extra two pins for the red and black but my original cable from the car doesn't have these female bits on top, so after some more reading I realised i need a 2 pin connector to house this which i've ordered now

The car was VW GOLF 7 , PASSAT B8 , TOURAN , SPORTSVAN and other models which i sourced 3Q0035844 from Ebay. I have a feeling the USB doesn't work yet, and I think AA/carplay won't appear until I connect my phone as it has the app-connect screen but only has mirrorlink available once i proceed through

Hi, it is 3Q0035844 with the same software train as OP. I don't think my USB is working yet so I have a feeling once i plug in phone successfully AA/CP will show up. I have the app-connect option but only see mirrorlink inside it now

From orig post step 4, you have to steal the read & black wires from orig MDI port

Step 4 - USB Port

Note, the USB port I ended up using is not compatible with Carplay, but it is with Android Auto. Instructions are the same, but your port will likely have an AUX cable. You can wire this in fully without needing a harness. I did not need to do this on mine.
  1. Take out cubby behind shift knob. Note, put the car in neutral with the parking brake on. It'll make it easier to get out
  2. Unplug the MDI port. There are 2 cables
  3. Your new USB port has the same 4 pin plug as the MDI port. Except for it has an additional 2 pins on the top. These are to charge your phone. As long as you got the female end of the plug in addition to the USB port, you'll be in great shape. Open the little purple door, and slide out the cable end. Swap the new cable end on the cable. Now your 4 pins are set up correctly.
  4. Now, you need to get wires to the 2 pins on top. Check out the tutorial on post 1307 here. Take the red and the black wires from the rectangle plug from the MDI. You can easily dismantle this all with a small screwdriver. See my video above for a bit more clarity. Pry open the door on the plug. Take a tiny screwdriver and press down on the pin latch. It'll slide out.

You may want to check that the unit is coded correctly when you receive the scan tool. For the 5F module, go to Adaptations -> Vehicle Configuration and ensure that both Google GAL and Apple DIO are enabled/on along with Smartphone interface for rhmi. If any of those were not enabled/on, enable them and then reset the unit by holding the power button on the display for ~15s-20s.
