I just did this on our Golf Mk7 GT and the difference in light throw on highbeam is amazing. The basics are the same, but you might want to choose a diffent lamp then I did. This DIY will let you hook the lights up to operate with the stock highbeam. I´ll assume that you know how to remove your grill for access, its just two torxs screws and abit of pulling.
There are hundreds of different models and applications, but I can show some examples below. Helped me decide on lights anyway
I used an auxillary light holder bought from a local company to mount the lights. Simply a 7mm steel plate with "ears" in which to mount the lights. Ridgid industries and several others offer variants of this mount. You will ofcourse need to remove the fron licenseplate and holder (If applicable)
Rigid industries make one http://www.rigidindustries.com/mounting-options/40016
The plastic in the bumper is quite thin, so I mounted some large washers and used 6mm screws with a locking nut on the inside. Its abit tricky to mount, but it can be done without removing anything.
Once the plate is in, you will need to do the electrical wiring. This isnt hard, you just need to follow the instructions on the relay harness. We bought a solid state closing relay used for cars with "sensitive electronics" from SEPAB in Sweden.
You need to run 4 leads and mount the relay
First we found a mounting point that could also act as a ground. Thats ONE wire done.
1. Permanent plus (or power from the battery) (two leads). I ran these inside the existing leads/wire channel on the firewall
2. Get the "Signal to light" from the existing harness on the golf.
For Bi-xenon cars, this is PIN 11 on the contact to the headlight. That contact comes out by depressing the locking tabv and pulling straight out
On HALOGEN cars, its PIN 8 - White/Purple
Then mount the relay and hook the ground wires (Two leads) up under the bolt.
The only thing remaining is to run the two wires containing both ground and power from the relay to the lamps. I didnt get any shots of this. But is fairly straightforward. Then connect the leads to the lights as the manufacturers instructions explain.
