Diesel vs gas

I did a search and nothing came up. So excuse the novice question, but I'm curious as to what the draw of diesel is except for the obvious gas mileage plus. It seems the only downs I can find is that diesel tends to be more expensive nowadays and cars don't accelerate as well. So what's the deal?

The draw of the diesel is the torque..................

The torque in the 2.0 Tdi makes the car feel very powerful, 30mph to 80mph in a very short space of time. Its my first VW or TDI car and i really didn't expect it to be this fast
