How should I know?

My guess is 95 as they use for all other cars. (Only Ron they in my dealers fuel pump).

Doesn't matter if you use the power output to 50%. Fill it up on your way back from the dealer, then you will get 97,5 mixture :).

No real reason to be concerned with RON unless your car is tuned, and being that it is just off the lot, I doubt that is the case. Just fill up with what you want next fill up, the ECU will adjust in the meantime. No damage done.

And truth is, there is really no way to know unless the dealer is truthful or you watch them fill it.

It sort of does matter but in the short term in may not, I like your thinking of the 95/98=97.5 I would imagine in paractice it would still be 95 as that is what may pre ignite 1st igniting the rest of the compressed fuel.

Very true , I do recall my MK5 pinking when using 95 ron .

Reply that I recently got from VW Technical - I was delighted to read you have purchased a Golf R. I can advise I have spoken with our Technical Support Team who has
confirmed the recommended minimum octane for your new Golf R is 98 RON. They would not recommend using a lower octane than what
has been advised by the factory.

They have advised if a lower octane fuel is used this will result in lower engine power output and may also produce engine
running or mechanical problems. If by using 97 or 95 RON fuel in your Golf R and this causes any consequential damage, your
vehicle's warranty will be affected.

I meant normally you get about 20% of the fuel tanks volume filled when you by a new car. Just fill it up and you will be fin and have about 97 Ron…:D

Of cause I always use 98 for the R.

When you are “running in” the engine the first miles you normally don’t push it hard. Therefore the turbo won’t over load so much. Low (or no) risk for problems. I just drove about 30 miles before I filled the car up with 98. No idea of what Ron the dealer used.

I understand what you meant, and yes the dealers often just put around a 1/4 tank in, so after 100 miles or so, the driver should be then using the known 98 RON, BTW pinking doesn't occur soley at high revs, but I agree, the 'damage' will not be lasting in the time the owner keeps the car. (And that's assuming the dealership didn't fuel up with 98.

My dealer only put 1/4 tank in...and I doubt it was 95...However the fuel flap/cap thingy says 98(95)....I've since treated it with Shell V-Power Nitro + ever since...

Is this on the R? I will re-check on the GTI, IIRC that shows 98 only also

On Vw site says 98 Ron for R, but fuel cap says 98/95 and 95 in smaller not bold if remember rightly.

My dealership agreed to fill tank but doubt be 98 Ron as I hoped, worst case scenario I have a full tank of 95 Ron and after it's v power all the way.

Pinking and ron

Pinking could occur at low or high revs as well.

A couple of years ago I sold our VW Passat 1.8T with BSR Stage 3 package to a friend. It was recommended by the tuning supplier (BSR) to run on 98 ron which I pin pointed to the buyer.

After about a year she experienced engine stop after acceleration and immediately braking at idling.

I talked to a guy who works with tuning. He said ask her if she uses 95. I did and the answer was yes, since a while she did. After using 98 again everything went back to normal. No known harm done.

The reason was that the steering unit/sw reversed the ignition so much to avoid pinking and the unit/sw wasn’t fast enough to forward it when idling so it stopped. He also said that a newer cars would do the adjustment faster so perhaps you don’t notice it more than the lack of performance. Also limited overload will prevent pinking since the compression will be lower (however the ratio will be the same). In any case one must use the right fuel…..

I think the pinking sensors are a type of microphones , but not 100 % sure .

(Perhaps a bit OT, sorry then)
