43,000 miles.

If the shop didn't refill it, I went 10,000 miles with no fluid in it.

10,000 miles without fluid would be hard to believe but obviously the fluid went somewhere and you said there wasn't any sign of it leaking out.

Yeah, I'm with you on this one. It makes no sense. The outer housing of the entire unit was clean, and all of the drain plugs were secure. Even the vent lines on the top were dry.

Why was the differential drained? I find it hard to believe a tech couldn't tell the difference. I had my Haldex fluid changed and the tech didn't touch the diff. Also, there is no maintenance schedule for the diff.

That's the million dollar question. No signs of visible leaking, and last haldex service was 10k miles ago. Independent vw/audi shop did haldex change, even cleaned the filter on the pump. The most feasible solution is the shop messed up, but 10k is a long way to go with no fluid.

New to the forum but I joined because of this post. Had a whining diff and put it into VW and they couldn’t diagnose it. So went to VW specialist and told them to change diff oil first and it was empty. No signs of leaks anywhere so it must have come like that from factory (car has done 52k miles) or at the last Haldex service they drained diff oil instead of Haldex oil. So I’ve been running with no diff oil for nearly 20k miles....

Diff oil has been changed but it is still noisy at 50-80mph so looks like permanent damage. Not happy as car has only ever been serviced by the one VW dealer.

Welcome to the forum. If you were running with no diff fluid it wouldn't have run for 20k miles. I would open a case directly with VW especially since all the service has been done by one dealer. Did you keep all the service records?

Wow, looks like the wrong fluid was used and it burned up/vented out leaving just a thick tar left over. Hard to tell from just a pic, would have to feel/smell it to know. It could also be just no fluid (say ¼ of what was needed) and the diff just burned the remnants up resulting in the same outcome. So, severely under filled or wrong fluid type (Haldex fluid?).

Haven't heard of this happening in any 4Motion GSWs or ATs. They only develop leaky pano roofs.
