how often are A6 and the like really blowing up from these fatal flaws?

I once was told by someone far more eloquent than myself that an Audi is like a beautiful woman. Great to look at, but the next thing you know you have chlamydia and it stings when you pee.

You're right the B58 (and really most any BMW straight 6) is a stout engine, but BMW's aren't expensive to own because the engine breaks down, they're expensive to own because everything around the engine breaks down.

My E60 had a n54, never once had a problem with the motor.
I did however have sensor after sensor go on me. The AWD system took a shit even though the car was running fine (and continued to run fine in rwd only mode), my steering angle sensor went and it cost $1200 for a new one. It's stupid shit like that which makes modern BMW's a pain in the ass to keep running. I ended up dumping that car having over $5k in outstanding repairs to be made and it only had around 90k miles.
I find that quite odd:
First BMW was 2011 X3- never an issue
2014 X3- never an issue
2012 328i Coupe- never an issue but had a rear strut squeak once, does that even count?
2013 328i Sedan - never an issue
2013 335i - never an issue.

My GTI has eaten a battery at 42k miles and a starter at 64k miles. Both were warrantied.
Ate the stock axles when I upgraded the clutch because the stretch bolts were not replaced. (also warrantied)
Sunroof surrounding glass has 1 inch crack on the driver side.
Headlight lenses massive cracking and splitting from.. SOMETHING
-otherwise a great car

You had 4 BMW's within 3 model years?

Of course nothing went wrong, you didn't keep them long enough for shit to fail :ROFLMAO:

I bought my e60 two years old as a lease return with 19k miles in 2010. I kept it until ~90k, and used it as a trade in for my 2018 GTI. I intended to keep it "until the wheels fell off" but I realized every sensor in that car will bankrupt me long before a wheel falls off. The first couple years were problem free, then in the last year/year and half it was nothing BUT problems.

Yea people kept running lights and hitting me or my ex (that is a thing down here, people drive like YOU are in THEIR way, and they expect you to be able to stop in time when they cut you off), all except for the 335i, I had that for a while and traded it for a truck. For some reason other drivers avoided that 335i like the plague, but all the other ones I was just simply "in their way"- I eventually grew tired of wondering when the 335i would get plowed into and had the need for a tow vehicle, so I got the truck.

I'm most likely going to be buying a new car in the next few months. I'm not sure if I will keep the GTI or not. IT's starting to show its age - still runs great and is fast, but the rattles, creeks etc... Are starting to add up. I may keep it as a summer car to enjoy. I decided that I'd like something bigger. Initially I was looking at a MK8 R, but then, that would be the fourth golf in a row that I own. I want something different. Budget is around $50K CAD. I'm looking at the following:

2019 x3 M40i
2019 540i
2019 440i grandcoupe

I want a 6cyl turbo car of sorts and the b58 is touted to be one hell of a capable motor. I was looking at the VAG group v6 turbo variant, and much like all VAGF motors it has some mortal flaw that can grenade a motor here and there: the rockers.

Any other suggestions are welcome.
Not a bad list... My parents' 2023 x5 50e is sweet as hell. It can go about 40miles without gas, which is realistically more than enough for daily city driving for most people (not sure how many miles you're racking up daily). But it also has the b58 so you get a mix of both worlds. Very solid car, smooth as hell, with a great interior.

Personally I'm eyeing m240i's for my next car, but if I needed a family car the x5 and x3 are both awesome options. I don't think I'd want to own it out of warranty tho lol

Seems to be a more serious issue with the rocker arms than our crankwalk is.

I don't like financing and i dont want to spend 70+K cash on a car. I'm looking at 2019 models of sorts.

I think if you get a 2020+ 3.0T you safe from rocker arm issues.

In terms of general brand reliability I have had my 2013 A4 since 57k miles (now 127k) and going on 6yrs. It's stage 2 with a JB4 stacked ontop of the flash, driven hard but very well maintained and it hasn't skipped a beat. I have the 2.0T notorious for oil consumption (EA888.2) and it doesn't burn a drop between 5k intervals. Every time I entertain dumping it, I can't think of a logical reason, I love it. My parents had a 2012 A4 2.0T CVT from 8k miles to 106k and it was brilliant, and now onto their second A7 which has been great as well. As a whole I think my family has had pretty good luck with VAG cars though.

Having said that BMW's are extremely solid, my E60 530xi had 180k when it got totaled and you wouldn't have known it from how it drove. Only issue was one failed injector which was excusable at that age/mileage IMO. Take some test drives to see what you like, I'd seriously recommend checking out a 2020+ M340 over the '19 440 though if it's in budget. the G20 chassis is a big step forward from the F3x

I used to sell both brands until and honestly they all have their little quirks but I'd own either one

All your cars? If I purchased a new Kia every year it would probably be issue free as well. Of course the second owners would need a new engine at 50k miles though.

No I have had domestic cars in the past that were just shit in my first year of ownership: All of BMW's were used purchases BTW.

98 S10 - 1100 miles in and whilst driving in the rain, water started collecting in the floorboard. Dealership found a bad weld seam in the back of the cab body.
97 Escort GT - Stayed in the shop all the time with fuel system issues, after a year I got rid of it.
97 Dodge Neon - LOL - lets not talk about that car
98 Dodge Ram R/T - Not bad but reverse kept going out. Kept it 2 years.
-I switched back to imports after that, with the exception of the F250 I had.

I've decided - the GTI will stay and I will get another car. I was looking at picking up "project" cars like a Mk2 and swapping a VR6 in it, but... Why not just keep my current car that I know everything about and use it as a pleasure toy. I'd get DCC deletes and slam it.

why not swap an EA888 into the mk2?

Keep that 4 cyl thing going or if you insist on being a cool guy and doing a cylinder swap....

We do, but they are more than I want to spend. I want to be at $50K CAD out the door.
I'll be honest, I had no idea the CTSVs had held their value so well when I suggested that, haha. I was thinking a 7 year old caddy would be under your number, but they're like $60k+ in the US!
