Daily Driven STU Setup

And another, just a reverse of yesterdays, with some adjustments to the start and finish.

Another top time in STU. Competition was 2- E46 M3’s, STI, 350z w/ 2 drivers, and another MK7 Golf R.

Not sure on the PAX, probably top 10 out of 70-ish.

Car is doing good. I’ll need new tires in another month or so, and I’m contemplating testing the front sway bar on full stiff/soft next event to see the differences.

Might look at moving my camera as well, I want to start seeing how close I am to the cones. Course workers say I’m pretty close, but some good videos would be helpful.

I actually don’t like it, visually exhausting.

This chapter has it in their club rules that all course will be chalked and coned to minimize the potential for people to get lost. Not sure the back story on that…

I think part of the challenge of autocross is learning to read the cones, and looking ahead in doing so.

Another double event weekend. This is a inaugural Winnemucca Wildcard, located in Winnemucca Nevada. Sponsored by the Boise and Reno regions.

Temps started low 50°’s with some light rain, and standing puddles. Warmed up to about 70°.

Took 1st in STU, and 4th in PAX, 9th in RAW, was hovering at 3rd for most the day.

Tires are getting close to being done. Think I’ll probably just go v730’s again.

Might as well dump this in the STU thread! Although I'm certainly not as good a driver. Critiques welcome - this wasn't my fastest lap by about a second but I didn't get video of the fastest. And yep, definitely took out the cone on the second to last gate!


Passenger side, different run. Definitely could get closer on some corners here.

Was working the last corner and saw you come through. A few runs you got behind early in the last elements and it bit you. But there were also a few runs where your line was 🤌 flowing great

Videos are always hard to really critique. But it looks like on some of the turns and slaloms you’re coming in late. I struggle with this myself, and try to keep reminding myself to backside the cone, don’t clip the front side of the cone.

I want to mount my camera outside sometime, see how close I am to cones. I was going to do it this weekend, but some showboatin’ camero confused the skinny pedal for the fat pedal today. Shut down the event for today and tomorrow.

Yeah I tend to struggle with the sweepers some. The transition over the crown of the 2nd taxiway is always tricky to judge (and I think my too-low rear damping tends to get me there too, always feels bouncy around that corner- really gotta send in for a revalve!)

Yeah staying ahead of it is definitely one of my focus points. The slalom just after getting onto the runway was tricky as it cut back at an angle, so judging entrance speed and angle was challenging. Getting behind on that slalom also tended to push me behind on the next couple big offsets too.

Shame about that Camaro, I'm always glad we have very little to hit on our track!

Anyone familiar with the rule book, does this mean a Haldex tune could be legal in STU?

In STH it means that fwd cars CAN reprogram the VAQ, but the AWD cars in the class, like the mk6 R CAN NOT tune the Halden.

It should mean STU you should be good to reprogram Haldex via OBD11 or such, but I don't think it allows a new controller, but you can ask SEB for clarification.

I was always under the impression messing with the Haldex was prohibited in STU, might be something I look into. Not sure if I need it, but may prove to have value.

So, new tire day. I feel along with just more drive time overall, learning tire psi sweet spots is something I struggle with.

The SFR region is a big region, with fast drivers, and national competitors prevalent in most classes, including STU. While it’s great to learn from them, I know my car will never compete as I have chose to retain some daily driven comfort.

1- 36f 40r
2- 37f 41r
3- 36f 41r
4- 37f 41r
5- 39f 42r

The fifth run was just a let’s see what higher psi does.. I liked the first and second runs, but will test a few more tomorrow.

I also felt I was very late on most everything on the course, consistently. Guess I’m at least consistent.

I settled at 4th in STU out of 10, 17th in PAX out of 82, and 25th in RAW.

Not sure on PAX since this chapter is painfully slow on posting results.

Now smoke, and no oil in the catchcan. Today would have been a ideal day for that otherwise.
