What's the range you're searching on there? I think I did a 500 mile range when I searched Cars.com for my GTI, lucky me it was only a ~7 hour drive to Ohio to get it, which I felt was tolerable.

For that matter as an open question, how far would y'all travel for a car? I think if the drive is 8 hours or under (with some short stops for food) I'd be game, if it's a car I want at a reasonable price, particularly if it's in the configuration I want. I'm not too big on flying and I really prefer driving for the sightseeing, but if it's like a 10-12 hour drive for something I can confidently fly out and drive back, I'd be up for it. Definitely not alone though, after a certain point the joy of driving alone kind of drops off.
I just about traveled cross-country to drive a Daihatsu Move back. Then realized that an n/a, automatic, fwd kei carvan wouldn't be the most fun thing to cross the rockies with in january.

I'm not the right guy to ask lol

Drove the ~16 or more hour drive from Denver to Chicago for my first S4. It was fun for about 5 minutes then ~16 hours of flat boring highway. Def longer than I prefer but worth it since it was the right car.

Beyond that I've had most of my last cars shipped to me...
MK7 V1: Bought 5 minutes from home
MK6 GTI: 2 hour drive, @jay745 was a straight up G and drove me there!
MK7 V2: Shipped from Virginia
S4 V1: Drove from Denver, sucked ass
Jetta: @jay745 was again a straight up G and delivered it right to me!
Jetta 2: Shipped to me from IN, but it wasn't a runner
Fiero: Shipped to me because again it wasn't running I didn't trust anything about it lol
Golf R: Shipped from Georgia just because I literally couldn't make the logistics work
S4 V2 (B8) picked up locally, regret it because my wife just HaD To Go SeE ThE CaR iN PeRsOn and wouldn't expand her search radius
S4 B5: Shipped from northern WI; just couldn't make a flight or ride happen, seller wasn't willing to meet in milwaukee

I love going along to live vicariously through other people. I drove a buddy ~4 hours round trip to pick up tires for his Evo in return for gas money, and it was a real fun time. I don't think I'd travel very far for something that was just 'meh' to me, but honestly I've really enjoyed all the cars that have been in our household as of late (aside from the s40 my wife bought while we were dating, that car was a massive pile and I will never let that happen again)

well you sir, have no life. lol.

There really is a point where towing a car via renting a truck, or using so much time, mileage and gas/tolls, flights, etc - just isn't worth it over paying for the car to simply be transported.

I think my ranges have been between 300-800 so far

I agree with you, but haggling in person can't be underestimated. Also laying eyes on the car because pics lie.
I have kids, this deal has been in the works since the fall, just couldn't get away until now.

I'm direly curious, what car and what's the context?

That was a nationwide search. I still have all my bookmarks from when I was trying to find my rs3, and for that car I absolutely had to search nationwide. A 500 mile range in FL doesn't take you very far, especially being at the bottom of FL.

I get a kick out of these people complaining about golf Rs. I looked at the nationwide inventory for those and saw a little over 120 of them. I wish I could have had that many cars available to me. 120 isn't a ton of them, but it's enough that if you give yourself a big enough radius and start making some calls you should be able to find one at msrp or close to it.

I sent one email and found one for $3k over MSRP, which probably could have even been negotiated down.

Edit: R, not RS3.

I ran the gas tank low enough to get my fuel light to come on for the first time. Didn't even break 250 miles on this tank though. I ended up with 247 miles and then put in 12.5 gallons. Puts me at about 19.7mpg around town. I guess that's better than what I was expecting. That's with 100% city driving.
