08 was about when I started to consider an STI because I loved the hatch. I had been in my MKV GTI for a couple of years at that point. I think the price for the STI was in the low-ish 30s, maybe? Wild to think that was peak hot hatch pricing at that time and now base GTIs are more than that haha.
The MSRP was $36k, but they were selling for $30k due to the early and frequent stories of the engine grenading and the fact we were in a recession in 08.

*PEAK* hot hatch that was NOT known for grenading cylinders (well maybe cylinder 3 once in a while and had some porous block issues in some years but ehh)

I paid $24k for a new Corrado VR6 in 93, so $31k for a base GTI seems pretty reasonable. 8V GTI was $12.5k, 16v was $17k in 92.

$12,500 in 1992 = $27,805 in 2024.
$17,000 in 1992 = $37,814 in 2024.
$24,000 in 1992 = $53,385 in 2024.

I think we're getting a pretty good deal.

hey they were wonderful performers, and some of americas ONLY attempts at making hot hatches (oh and ford focus of course) and that was pretty much it. coming from the chevy world, the second i sat in a VW interior my heart completely changed

last drove a 17 WRX....cross shop when GTI. faster but not as fun. Noticeably bigger and I prefer hatch over sedan.

Also drove BRZ.....back then slow

I don't like them either, but I never imagined I'd have so much fun going so slow when I drove one on a track. They're a hoot

Fits are dope. Miss mine but like the GTI more.

I still want to get one and K swap it.

Worked with a guy who had one of these. Yeah interior is trash but sleeper to the max.
