I agree that sucks, but how many people have heard of this/ had it happen? Does anyone know or was it just 1 guy? Say out of 10,000 gti’s how many people had this? Maybe 1-10? Its seems like a very small % of people I would think or else everyone would say do it, why not. Or maybe im wrong and everyone is doing it.

Same could be said about the early turbo revisions. They break, but not all of them, and no one is saying to replace them just because you have one. See where I am going with this. Like you said its sample size, and this forum is extremely small as far as total GTI's out there. The term is luck of the draw. If you can avoid it ever happening by taking it out or buying a new one for $8, why not.

I have a silica bag in our Seat Leon Cupra R and also in our Golf 7 All Track, both cars from -18 and with the EA888 engine.
Think my former Golf R 2014 also had it (from an old pick of engine bay, the text is there).

Many of you worry to much ;). Since the engineers have decided to put the bag in it should be there. I will leave it as it is.

Seems to be a mixed bag of opinions here, thanks guys. Definitely sparked the thought for some people at least, I'll probably just leave it in as like a couple of you have said, not many people have had one split.

If anyone decides to take it out though, let me know how it goes.

I feel as if attempting to remove it poses a bigger risk of the bag breaking than leaving it in does. There are no moving parts in the tank to give it a reason to break and the engine bay heat/coolant temps and chemicals should definitely not cause damage to it. My guess is the ones that break are from people who use funnels to fill the tank and catch the bag with the funnel tip or something. All purely speculation so I may be way off base, but thats my two cents. My sack won't be going anywhere anytime soon

Could you not remove the silica bag and then replace the G13 coolant with Waterless Coolant which has anti-rust properties?

Regular coolant has anti rust properties. The GTI is the first car I've had that had the silica bag.

I plucked mine out. Whether it’s prone to break or not was irrelevant to me. The mere fact that there’s a foreign material in a mesh bag that has ANY possibility for breaking was enough for me to remove it.
