So…..

Hello everyone first post thanks in advance!

Ive had my 2013 GTD for about a year now, and my coil light started coming on intermittently while the engine was struggling to heat up (peaking at 70) and the coolant dial was also only getting halfway to 90 degrees on the dial. Took it to my local garage, rinsed me out of a new battery and the problem still present.

Now once the engine is up to 70 the coil light disappears after a restart, the EML sometimes comes on, sometimes it doesn’t. But it has for the VW garage, they’ve quoted me, £1,100 to replace the high pressure fuel pump, diagnostic inc. and once that is fixed £700 to replace “the thermostat” but the guy said that this was based on guess work and he can’t be sure that it would fix the problem only when the new thermostat is fitted could the workshop be sure that its the correct solution or not.

Now this sounds like im being rinsed out of nearly £2k hear, I need help in finding out if this is normal garage behaviour? And if these prices are also normal? And do the solutions to my issues sound familiar to anyone else with a similar situation.

Update, collected the car and the garage said they had flushed out the coolant system and ran it for an hour. I drove away for less than a mile and my coolant high temp warning went off, pulled over refilled it, as it was nearly empty, i was on my way back to the garage to tell them this and the high temp went off again into red on the dial so i had to pull over and let the car cool down next to a rail crossing…not ideal. I let it cool down and moved it to a safer location, warning went off again after a couple hundred metres funnily enough. A member off staff came out and gave me 3ltrs of coolant, it literally drained straight through the system onto the floor, i had to call a recovery vehicle as the car wasn’t holding coolant, the garage couldnt tow me back and everyone in the workshop had gone home by 12pm that day apparently, i had arranged with the garage a courtesy car, but the recovery vehicle kept getting delayed and took 5 hours to get me that half mile, when the garage was closed. I had swapped spare keys with the garage for my car and the courtesy car so that issue was solved but my day was a nightmare. Thinking of putting in an official complaint with volkswagen, tell me if thats being a bit strong, i have got to wait 2 days for any news on the car with it being closed tomorrow. I also did not get a complimentary clean included in my £1800 bill, which i thought wasn’t good either. Just a nightmare of an experience really

They didn’t connect the coolant hose to the radiator properly, but the car is STILL coming up with glow plug light flashing and the eml light, plus the engine rattle when turned on. Winding me up

Put in a complaint if you haven't
Gave me a 3 service vouchers, replaced the fuel filter for free, and didnt charge for the diagnostic on this visit. But after a few weeks and less than 100 miles on the clock since this last visit, the same dash lights are on again. And now its back in the garage (because I see it as their error, if not definitely a misdiagnosis) and after 2 days they told me they weren’t liable because it wasn’t the fuel filter at fault, it was the fuel filter control module so i’ve got to fork out another £300, is it worth complaining VW? It is a VW approved garage, or is the Motor Ombudsman a better angle
