What’s up guys. Picked this car up about a year ago and wanted to document the build as it gets a little more serious.

Build List as of 11/24/24

  • H&R front and rear sway bars
  • VWR Springs
  • 034 Camster Mounts
  • APR Stage 2 93 Ecu and Tcu Tune
  • APR front mount intercooler
  • APR Carbon Fiber Intake
  • CTS Turbo Muffler Delete
  • CTS Resonator delete
  • USP Motorsports Catted Downpipe
  • Girodisc Front and Rear 2-piece rotors
  • EBC yellow stuff brake pads
  • 255/35r18 Kumho Ecsta V730
  • 18x8.5 Motegi MR140
  • Fluidampr Balancer
Next Mods
  • Coilovers or some sort of new strut/spring combo
  • Haldex tune
  • Front Limited Slip
  • CCDesign single exit exhaust
  • Macan Brembos?
  • MIB 2.5 retrofit
I’m building the car to be a competitive STU (GST now I guess) car locally and something that at least wouldn’t get last place if I took it to nationals. (I know the R won’t win nationally lol)

I currently daily drive the car and even when I purchase a truck/trailer it will still probably spend quite a bit of time on the street.

The day I picked it up. 2 owners, 72k miles and clean as a whistle. November 2023

Didn’t take long and I ordered a few mods. VWR springs, Aerofabb front splitter and rear spoiler extension, and some maintenance items.

Spent a bunch of time trying my hand at polishing and waxing the car one weekend

One fateful night on my way home from work I hit a chicken mid flight. The joys of living in Arkansas I suppose. New OEM headlight assembly ordered and installed.

Got some NASTY weather for Arkansas and this thing dominated the ice and snow. Even on some Michelin PS4S tires.

Shortly after that in March I attended my very first Autocross event and was HOOKED.

Attended two more events after that on my PS4S tires and ended up chunking them half way through the day before my 3.5 hour drive home 😅 Ordered a dedicated set of wheels and tires for Autocross and some 034 Camster plates. 255/35 Kumho v730s and Motegi MR140 wheels (just a hair over 18 pounds a piece and pretty cheap)

Finished out the rest of the season and ended up winning the overall Novice class for the year! I’ve been tempted to return the car to stock and buy a Miata but everytime I drive the car hard I just want to keep it. I know it’ll never be a nationally competitive rig but I want to make it the best I can for local and maybe some smaller national events.

Current plans are a new suspension setup that’s “livable” on the street but can do a bit better on track. I’m so tired of the “crashy” feeling I get with the VWR springs on big dips. Currently looking at the EQT coilovers, Fortune Autos, or the Ground Control coilover conversion and keeping DCC. (Any input here?)

Would like to eventually do a haldex tune and limited slip in the front. Maybe Macan brembos? Also hate the MIB1 radio in the car and REALLY want to do the MIB2.5 retrofit but you know, priorities.

Thanks!

Hard to beat how good a Lapiz 7R looks! I like what you've done with it do far!

How do you like the muffler delete? any drone?

Jeez I want a Lapiz blue R so bad, specifically a 2017 and DSG. This build thread does not help me sir lol.

Coilovers I would recommend ST - XTA's as they have KW DNA in them and built in the same factory.

I have the Macan's, - favorite mod so far.

Start looking at tunes, but choose wisely and think about (obviously) where you might want the car to end up power wise.

STU is tough in a Golf. Evo's are running 295's and we can barely fit 255. I know you're aren't the be all end all, but that a huge difference.

I'm still on the stock rear muffler, just deleted the resonator and 3" catted downpipe. IMO it's perfect, it can get a tiny bit raspy at certain times but I think throwing a cheap bullet resonator in place should get rid of the rasp without losing the good tone I like.

Thanks!! I was just looking at the XTAs actually.

I'm currently APR stage 2 and I know the car could be faster, but from what I've read the APR software is on the "safer" side of things timing wise so I'm happy with it right now. Maybe I'll go EQT in the future but not sure if it'll be worth the cost.

Anybody gone from APR to EQT tuning? lol

Just to get caught up on the story so far. Enjoy a Pic dump.
Test fitting the newly acquired wheels and tires. #datmeat

First event with the V730s and first time on some proper 200tw tires. What a difference!!

Picked up a 24 ACS for the wife. This thing is sweet

Got serious about competing which meant the aerofabb splitter and spoiler extension had to go.
