Clutch Replacement in NJ

Anyone have recommendations for a shop or someone doing side work for a MK7 GTI clutch replacement that won't break the bank on labor? Looking to do a stronger clutch while still utilizing a dual mass flywheel. I'm in the Somerset/Hunterdon county area and looking for someone within an hour of me. I have reached out to a few local shop that work on VW's and waiting on their responses.

There is a VW speciality shop 2 hours from you in PA that does clutches for under $500. If you need to stay local, I would recommend A2B Motorsports in Stanhope. Good luck!

I’ve also heard good things about A2B motor sports. Can’t speak to their labor rates, but they have a good reputation.

I highly recommend TCR Performance. Great experience with them multiple times.

$500 is pretty fair for a clutch job, especially if they're a VW specialist and not some hack indie shop that will reuse old bolts and install with little attention. Doubt anyone but yourself or like GTIjake will carefully torque everything down exactly per VW spec lol but I guess as long as its good enough.

Asked a German performance shop around here for a rough estimate on the labor for a clutch job out of curiosity and was told almost $1K :ROFLMAO: I just hung up the phone. Thank the lord both of mine were covered under warranty.....

Oh and I have the Sachs performance clutch that retains the DMF in mine. Like it so far, have like 5K or so miles on it with no issues. Just wouldn't recommend going above stage 2 with it, even that torque level is near its limit.

I have the Sachs 4 puck that uses the factory DMF. The clutch works well, but groans during take offs from a stop. It probably shouldn't be on the top of anyone's list that wants an OEM feeling and sounding clutch.

I recommend Josh at TCR. He did my RSR clutch this past November and did good work. He got the subframe back on where I didn’t have to get an alignment afterwards. I paid a shop more local to me to align it a few days later and they didn’t charge me as all was within spec. Reasonable labor rate too.

I was considering this as well but, while it seems to be more daily friendly than a regular 4 puck, it did sound a bit too much for me.

To be fair, even my sachs performance clutch chatters a bit at idle at times and the throwout bearing (new OEM one replaced when the clutch went in) makes some weird sounds if you slip the clutch when fitting it in a tight parking space.

As OEM as my unit is, it is definitely a noticeable difference from stock, both in terms of the occassional weird sounds and the increased pedal effort. Overall I'm happy I went with this over something more aggressive.

This is a cool thread lol. I grew up in the same area as OP and now live in PA. What is the name of the shop out here? No clutch needed in the foreseeable future, but good to know for if/when I pull the trigger on a tune.
