Took car to dealer. They said the timing chain cover is leaking on the pump and cracked the plastic thermostat housing so they’re not replacing it under the settlement

Do I believe that? No, but it seems I’m stuck without a car for while and doing this myself

Go to a better dealer.

I hear you and I agree, I got a bad draw on that dealer; but if I end up paying for more tows and more $200 dealer diagnostic fees it will quickly hit diminishing return territory, probably is already. Think I’m just going to follow the FCP Euro walkthrough then vacuum fill it.

I attempted the settlement route because the MK7 qualifies for it, plus my 24v is in the middle of a timing chain, clutch and crackpipe/water pump job of its own and is taking up my work space. Glad the 2.5 hasn’t broken down yet but I suppose there’s time for that.

Out of curiosity does anyone know what the max temp the coolant in these boys can reach before components start suffering and will eventually fail? My temps got near 240 on OBD11 live data when trying to diagnose the mismatch between the dash and the real data. Chances are it has been in that territory more than once lately. The dummy gauges read 200 when it’s much higher. If I go the replace myself route, I’ll lose the reimbursement in the case there was longterm damage. That’s provided a dealer will admit it.

240? What were you doing? I have logs with 240 but I was overheating on the track. The dummy gauge stays at ~200 anwhere between ~180 and 235 before it will move.

Me:
the dummy gauge isn't real, it can't hurt you

I got up to 290 water temp on track (don't forget to turn AC off) and it warped the aux water pump. The car will sound like whales humping when you shut the car off. Good times.

Sitting in the driveway reading live data, watching my engine work hard as I enjoyed a cold brew

Something is wrong if you see 240 coolant temp idling.

Correct. I had the car towed to the dealer. They said it's the upper timing chain cover dripping oil on the thermostat housing and causing a very small leak, and not the water pump. Quoted me 2K+ to fix a bunch of random nonsense

Car got towed home with insurance and my Rock Auto pump arrived already. For added reassurance I have a new PCV valve too

PS Don't you just love those fridge magnets they send?

The upper timing chain cover is pretty far away. How can it leak enough oil that far away to destroy the thermostat?

They insisted this was the case and wouldn't even examine the water pump until it was fixed, since they had seen what they described as it happening so often. I actually ordered a new one with my pump and upon examination there is some oil on it but that's just from me being sloppy with the IKEA funnel I used on the last oil change. The magnet seals may actually have a small weep to be fair. You're right though, there isn't really a path to the pump; the exhaust side maybe.

My upper timing chain cover has been weeping since before the dinosaurs, but my thermostat went to shit some time ago due to something else. I still need to fill out the VW reimbursement form. I hated replacing the thermostat/water pump in my garage.
