Purge valve is also toward the front I think, so easy to access ? But can these 2 valves be checked reliably for damage ?

When you say purge valve, do you mean the turbo wastegate? That's located under the turbo when the turbo is mounted on the engine. It's difficult to access without getting under the car.

So this car keeps getting weirder. Went today to a private VAG specialist shop with access to VW servers and flashed the latest official ECU on the car. But that was the least of it :) Car had begun to pull slighty better since yesterday and today it got noticeably better before I flashed it. All on its own  The new ECU seems to have improved things even more, but not sure by how much. The car still only pulls well on some runs, others it's relatively weak. Only now it pulls stronger more often, say maybe 1 in 3 runs. There's a clear difference between when it pulls stronger and when it's weak. Also the best pulls are in 3rd, while 2nd is usually weaker. It still has trouble pulling at lower revs (below 3000 rpm), when it pulls it's usually above 3000-3500 rpm. However by the end of the day I did some runs in 2nd and it pulled pretty well, with low(er) lag as well. Also it pulled pretty good from around 2000 rpm on these last runs. WTF ??!! o_O

One thing I noticed on several runs, if I rev the engine beforehand and step on it when the turbo is presumably already spooled, it pulls much harder. It's not just about lag, but peak torque can be considerably higher this way (though not always). One time I think it was in 3rd and I stepped on in around 2000 rpm and not much happened. So I let off around 3000 rpm, waited for 1-2 seconds and then stepped on it again (it had dropped a few hundred rpm). And the second time it pulled like mad, from start to 5000+ rpm. So there might be problems with spooling the turbo ? It's probably some mechanical part that's faulty somewhere. I thought about the larger intercooler being to blame, but that wouldn't explain such large differences in peak torque.

Opinions are welcome.
