Yup.. the name of the game is figure out where the limits are first, then tweak up as much as you're comfortable. Some of these other guys have some known good numbers to plug in though. I think @goodvibes has such numbers. I actually don't have a lot of experience tuning the JB4 with a stock ECU, so my process will always be get rid of the knock and start pushing back up.

It's so gas dependent. Maybe try,11-12-12-13-14-14-14-14-13-12-11-10.

I'll know more in a few days, LOL.? I'm setting fuel to 60 when I do this time. My afr was fine but trims were very high 40s the last time I tried max runs. May have affected overall advance a bit.

Has he run maps 2 and/or 3 just to see what's up

@mattcarr, if you haven't, running maps 2 and 3 are good to get a baseline. start at 2 and don't run 3 until we see where 2 is at.

Try map 2 and see how it looks. Mine is not holding 5.5 psi peak on winter gas. Here's one I ran today that will need to be lowered a bit until summer gas is back. 70*, uphill. Basically, the entire map needs to be lowered ,5 psi and 5k, 1psi. The boost curve will then have the right sort of shape for the 1.8. I suspect I'll be able to run more in summer. The target #s will give you that log's map values if you average up to the nearest 1/2 number.

I'm going to set it at 1-2-3-4-5-5-5-4.5-4-3-2-1 and wait for summer gas.

Set it to what works now, the car *SHOULD* add boost as needed when using additive. I think IAT 60 to 70 is the best temp to set the additive target curve.

The gas is still a variable. Winter gas is more volatile and probably can't hold as much boost. That said, you're correct for a year round set it and forget it map. I'll use those last settings and log again in the middle of May and see what happens.

Try switching the JB4 to "additive" mode instead of absolute mode. Enter these settings in to the specified RPM fields.

1500 - 3
2000 - 3
2500 - 3
3000 - 3.5
3500 - 3
4000 - 3
4500 - 4
5000 - 5
5500 - 5
6000 - 4
6500 - 4
7000 - 4

IGN1 is Timing advance (good)
IGN2-4 is knock (bad)
DME_BT is the ecu's factory programmed boost target value
Target is your JB4 programmed additive value. It's either an absolute value (car tries to reach the value), or additive value, JB4 takes the value then adds it on top of the DME_BT value for a final boost number.
Boost: Logged boost value.
Thanks, I tried the additive settings. What I now understand about the latest log is that knock is zero through third gear, which is good. Target plus DME_BT is close to Boost but not exactly, I’m not sure if that’s good. I’m also not sure what signifies good Timing.

Make the 5000 value 4, make the 6000 value 5.

You don't want DME_BT to be close to Boost. The further apart you can get them without much correction, the more power you're making safely over stock.

You want to see that IGN_1 number going up like it does in your third gear pull.

Okay, made those changes. The temperature was 55 F for these logs. It’s warming up here.

Here’s a log of Map 2.

Run your pointer through the map 2 log, note the targets at the 2500,3000,etc positions and put them in your Map 6. You have a good starting point there.
Okay, this is what I found:

1500 ?
2000 4
2500 4
3000 4
3500 4
4000 4
4500 4.5
5000 4.8
5500 5.3
6000 5.4
6500 ?
7000 ?

Should I try these exact numbers in Map 6? What would be good for 1500, 6500 and 7000? Thanks.

Okay, I will try it this week.

Should I still try this? How about Map 3? Thanks.

Stay with additive for now and I think my #s are likely a better starting point than map 2 though both are fine. Point is to run something for results so you can get feedback.
