I'm curious if there's any interest in discussing 17 inch OEM wheel options for those looking for a weekend track/autox setup? With the assumption that OEM wheels are generally durable and cheap since they are easy to come by used, are there any lists floating around with 17 inch oem vw and audi wheels that fit our platform?

Insteresting idea. Let me add two thoughts:

1. Mk 5 and Mk 6 wheels (+ Beetle, Jetta; Passat, A3 and TT) will fit as well, giving plenty of choice.

2. Stock wheels are just 7.5", some even just 7,0" wide, which isn't that great for wider tires.

I would think the reason you'd want 17s would be to save weight for AutoX or track days ? Seems like OEM wheels would defeat that purpose as they tend to be heavy.
I think you might be better off with some lighter, used aftermarket wheels, which are plentiful in the classifieds as well.

This- OEMs are usually pretty heavy. If I remember right though Goals are a good and popular option as far as wheels made by VW go. Should be about ~8-10 lbs. lighter than our stock wheels if memory serves me right.

So then hypothetically, which would be preferred if you're concerned with the strength of the wheel? Slightly heavier OEMs or the super cheap aftermarket 17s on, for example, tirerack?

Which wheels on Tire Rack? Their house brand (TR Motorsports) are priced well and plenty durable. The lower-end Enkei wheels are also plenty strong and light. If you're looking for an SCCA autocross setup make sure you get wheels with specs that comply with the rules for your intended class.
