Brakes squeaking

Not sure if anyone can answer or not, and obviously it depends on my driving style etc, but i'm quite delicate when it comes to braking.

For about 3 weeks now, my brakes have started squeaking. Not only this, when i'm driving about 10-15 mph i'm getting a constant squeak as if something is not released properly or is worn down too much. Should I have to replace my brake pads at 10,500 miles? Come to think of it, it sounds like it's coming from the rear more than the front, could it be something not quite right with auto-hold? Or perhaps it's my perception with the windows open and it's actually from the front.

Any advice appreciated,
Matt

Definitely not ! I am not sure about the source of the noise though.

1) Have you washed your car and left it for a while. Deposits of rust can form on the discs. Its nothing to worry about as next time you use the brakes the discs are wiped clean. This can cause noise but only temporary.

2) Gentle braking can polish the discs too much and not clear brake dust. Try a few heavy braking stops this will clear any brake dust deposits.

Hi Chris 43,

Thanks for your quick reply. My car always gets a few heavy stops after washing for that exact reason, and as I do motorway driving sometimes it is unavoidable to stop heavily when traffic suddenly grinds to a halt. I have tried given the brakes a few stomps to eliminate the issue but it does temporarily and then comes back.

I just wanted to know if VW are going to turn around and bill me for new brake pads etc. I will book it in today!

Bought the VW as we were having our first baby and needed something bigger / safer / and more reliable. The reliability aspect seams to be going against me at the moment, ah well!

Thanks again,
Matt

I would put it down to the recent very wet weather and your driving style, if the breaks do work fine then its probably nothing to worry about. At 10,500 miles you should not need new break pads, if you do I'd be very surprised

Cheers, I think you might be right! I'll see how I go when it dries up a touch. I live in sussex and have been through lots of standing water recently, couple this with freezing conditions in the morning sometimes it may be playing a part.

Thanks for the advice.

Mine do just the same and seem to be rusting which then burns off after use. Maybe what theyre made of may be more prone to rusting, thereby squeaking after the first couple of applications after theyve been standing a while, and the light surface coating of rust has formed

Mine are rusting after less than 2k miles, the car is out in a car park and it rains almost every day now:D After a rainy night I can hear the squeaking too, not sure if it's the brakes as it is also noticeable when the car is rolling at low speeds. I was very surprised to see the brake discs in this state after such a short time.

It is rust deposits. I have them too and if the weather is wet and your brake disks get hot it will oxidize faster. I left my car unused for a month and the rust built up was so bad that it made a popping sound when i tried to take off.
