Brake cleaning suggestions

I live in Canada where lots of salt and dirt gets on the car over winter's. I'm doing brake pad change for the first time on my car, and after opening up the caliper, everything looks absolutely disgusting.

A friend suggests spraying everything with brake cleaner and just gives it a wipe. After several passes, it's still pretty nasty. I can barely see past the brown cake of dust and rust, especially near the brake pad mounting area. Any pro tips on cleaning and lubricating brakes for newbie?

WD40 and a metal brush for the slides, if you have a dremal with a metal bristle attachment that would work even better
