Bought Almost New Tires, but dates are 2017!

I picked up some slightly used tires off Facebook marketplace, and thought the date codes were from another set that I saw, so I didn’t even look at the codes when I picked them up. I just looked and they are 2017 codes on all four. The tires do look to be in excellent condition overall with 9/32 tread depth and no degeneration visible. Am I screwed? Or are these ok to use?

yeah.....lifespan is technically 6-10 years regardless of tread depth....be careful

I guess I’ll end up trashing them and pick something else up. They will be 8 years old if I were to mount them in the spring. Literally throwing out the $400 I paid. Wife’s going to kill me. Guy I bought them from is radio silent but it’s my fault anyway.

Post them back up for sale for $200, but be honest about the age. "Look to be in fine condition, plenty of tread, but a 2017 date code".

Recoup some money at least.

why don't you post some pictures of them? how do they feel to the touch? do they seem dry rotted? do they seem to have an oily feel still? were they stored outdoors? lots of factors to consider. it should be pretty obvious whether they seem safe or not. putting used tires on your car to save a few bux is a whole other topic, tho...

If you don't do a lot of long highway trips far away from home I'd run them if they look to be in good shape and there's no signs of dry rot or cracking.

Well, the tires look in great shape, but I enjoy spirited driving and that’s my concern. It’ll be in the back of my head all of the time. I’ll get pics up later.

Back when I was a poor college student I ran all kinds of used ages tires…nowadays I would not do it. Only thing that holds your car to the road are the tires, I wouldn’t try to save money there.

it looks like he rode the outside edge pretty hard on them, that would be my concern... loss of grip while cornering hard. but only you know how hard you drive. also, what is that strip going down the middle of each tire, is that some sort of designator like a "time to replace" line?

Honestly, even though the detail in the close-up pictures is hard to see, they look dry. I wouldn't spend the money to mount them.
