Big Turbo GTI v. R Upgrade

Or you could by a base model (S) Golf Sportwagen with 4Mo, upgrade to the IS20 or 38, and send it for about $25k all-in and be able to haul stuff and put the power down. I'd get the R if I wanted a ton of power in a hatch. I'd get the GTI to have the go kart and keep the turbo stock with a Stage 1 tune to keep things orderly in a fwd car.

Are you saying not to be a dick or life throws you curve balls?

:ROFLMAO: neither. I meant it took a turn that it wasn't supposed to. Lol.

But those will work too.

Of course you can. You get the same motor in the S that you do in the Autobahn.

I got my S for $24K. The R was $38K minimum. Haldex AWD + 60hp + an extra 300lbs isn't even remotely worth $14K.

It's not just about the engine. SE-Autobahn, there are differences in trim above the S, which is why you really have to compare R to Autobahn. LED, pp, cc seats, etc.

No one cares if you don't care about the options available above the S, they are still there in the R and they still cost actual physical money. They are part of the car. There is nothing you can do about it. The math doesn't care about that, either.

That's why thinking "it doesn't matter" when comparing the cost of those models is silly. You're conveniently annoying actual real things that really do cost money, and so by comparing Autobahn to R you are essentially eliminating the bulk of those costs in the price differences as a fairer evaluation of the cost difference in performance from R to GTI.

You're right that Haldex + 60hp isn't worth $14k; because there's a lot more in that $14k that the S doesn't have, and it's real cost that you can't ignore.

So I want a GTI S with awd.

Perfect.

Ideally, you could get a golf R, stripped down with awd for 35k and for 45k, a Golf R with the 2.5

yeah, exactly. There isn't an honest, real-world way to compare an R to a base GTI. I think everyone understands that what people want is an S with R performance guts, but that just isn't an option from VW.

Me....I'd rather get an R, a wrecked RS3, and pop the RS3 motor and such into the R. :D
