My battery died. 2019 AutoLite, I think made by Autozone or Advance auto.
Typically with a full battery, when I press the start button, the starter turns about 4-5 times to get the engine running.. This time, it turned 3 times and stopped. I tried again, it turned twice and stopped. Tried again, it turned once, tried again, it didn't turn at all. Got a jumper cable and started the car. When I got the engine started with the jumper cable, there was a fault signal about stability control , that disappeared on its own.

Off to NTB and now I have a new battery. Drove the car home and noticed the clock and odometer were incorrect (made me think the NTB tech didn't put one of those battery "bridge" devices to keep the clock and ODO happy). As I pulled into the garage, I turned OFF the light switch, and my headlights and DRL's are on with the engine running. It used to be that when I turned the light switch OFF, the headlight turn off but DRLs stay lit (unless I had the handbrake engaged) Pushed the ignition OFF, and all the lights went out. And an error signal came on the dash "Fault: Vehicle lighting". Turned the ignition on, and all the lights came on again despite the light switch off. Grabbed the VCDS to try and clear the fault codes, plugged the RossTech Hex-Can VCDS Interface and the plug would not light up. Computer says the USB port isn't plugged in. It is. There just no LED on at the interface

Cigarette lighter works. Radio is fine. How did my VCDS interface stop working? Fuse #5 which is 5 amp behind the storage bin under dash is not blown

Sounds like the tech who fitted the battery "did something".....

If you have VCDS why did you not fit the battery yourself & do the coding yourself??...all info in my very old thread ...first post...

VCDS coding required

From the Main screen:-
Select Control Module [Select]
[19-CAN Gateway]
Advanced Functions screen:-
[Adaptions-10]
New value choice screen:-
Change the following four channels, inputting the relevant data about the new battery.
IDE03256-MAS06105-Battery adaptation-Rated battery capacity
IDE03256-MAS06106-Battery adaptation-Battery technology
IDE03256-MAS06107-Battery adaptation-Battery manufacturer
IDE03256-MAS06108-Battery adaptation-Battery Serial Number

When you click on "Battery technology" (using VCDS 21.3.0) a drop down list appears with the following options (= actual meaning):-
Wet = Standard Lead Acid
Fleece = Standard A.G.M.
Wickel6V
Wickel12V
Ultracap
Gel = Standard Gel Lead Acid
Lithium ions = Standard LiFePO4
EFB = Standard E.F.B.
Binary - AGM = "Bipolar" A.G.M. type
EFB+ = E.F.B. "Plus" type

According to various sources of information, including numerous car scans & threads on Ross-Tech, "Fleece" is for standard AGM batteries, "EFB" is for standard EFB batteries, & "Wet" is for standard lead acid batteries, as these settings are used at the factory. The setting of "Binary - AGM" is apparently for specialist "Bipolar AGM" batteries! Also the drop down list is from VCDS & not generated by your car's BCM, therefore, your car may not support all the options on the list, & the BCM will reject the value when you tell it to accept it!

Battery BEM codes are now redundant with the above separate channels. The most important channels are:- Rated battery capacity, Battery technology, & Battery Serial Number. For the Battery Serial Number, just change one digit of the old one. This channel tells the BCM that a new battery has been installed & to relearn the new battery & forget any “learnt values” for the old battery!

I do not have the 12V supply. NTB said they had it.
Currently the VCDS interface does not work because of the above glitch.

I recon they have not coded the BCM for the new battery.....& this is why VCDS isn't working....as the BCM still thinks the old dead battery is installed & will not supply the correct power.......I would suggest to either take the car back to them & get them to fix it...or you get a 12V supply for the car & try VCDS again....

I have a Ctek charger that does normal & AGM battery types & also has a 12V supply setting....

You're lucky that's all that happened. I was at my dealer and they brought in a VW that wouldn't start after they had their battery changed at an auto supply store. Cost the owner a new VW battery and setup. I wasn't there long enough to see if the electrical system was fried. I have VCDS and still use VW batteries. An auto supply battery only lasted 6 months for me. This was on an older GTI before you needed to mate the battery to the car.

When something like this happens, isn't the auto supply store liable to some degree?
Good question, I don't know. I would ask them first if they do the coding. The problem is, what if you don't know about it? I don't think that detail is in the owner's manual. The batteries are only warranted for I think 2 years now, so maybe VW doesn't care if you know. More money for their dealers.
