Battery - 2018 R

So the battery on my 2018 R is pretty dead after ~15K miles and <4 years. Been on it's last leg for a year now, the pandemic seems to have killed it off. I do have a CTEK which I've been resurrecting it with, that's getting a bit old. Going anywhere is an adventure, the suspense of "will it start". I have to assume this car has exceptionally high idle drain - never had battery fail this soon before. There is an odd node in the handbook as well about leaving the car unlocked will drain the battery (!).

Question - is it really necessary to tell the car the battery is changed if it's the same type/chemistry of battery? I would guess that's the only meaningful thing the charge system actually needs to know. It's certainly the only thing that plug in chargers/conditioners care about - they don't need to know capacity, serial, age, or anything else to recondition/charge batteries.

Seems ridiculous to shell out 200 for vcds or almost that much for one year of pro odb11 (crippled iOS version) that I'm going to use once, just to change the battery....

Thanks.

Yes the battery should be adapted unless everything about the replacement is identical to the one that's being replaced. Capacity, amps etc. Or the car won't charge it properly. Some places that sell batteries can do the adaptation for free.

Great post, thanks for the link.

The other oddity I noticed is that 2018 has no batteries matched (in fact most VWs don't) for Interstate. Previous and next MYs do.... was there something special about the 2018 cars battery wise, or is this just a gap in Interstate's database?

I think its more a database failure than anything else....

Basically you need the biggest size for the MQB platform tray which is a H6/096/Group 48:- 278mm long, 175mm wide, 190mm high................ in either an EFB or AGM construction......AH & CCA rating will vary from brand to brand...

Is the car a DSG? 18 wouldn’t have Start/Stop, right? I know my manual GTI uses an H5 and DSGs with start/stop use the H6, but do all DSG years?

The OP has a MK7.5 R....I know the MK7 Golf R were built in Germany & were basically European spec...so that would mean stop/start...regardless of transmission..

The NAR spec GTI were build in Mexico, so you didn't get stop/start until much later....THB the H5 is too small a capacity if you have loads of electrics...my car (1.4lt GT) had a H5 case from factory & I have loads of electrics & stop/start...I replaced mine within a few months of getting the car with a big H6 AGM....

Weird, the Mk8 R with a manual doesn't have start/stop and I'm nearly certain the Mk7 with a manual doesn't either.

The stock H5 had something silly like 380cca, but my replacement AGM is 780, but I still got three years out of the original, which is pretty normal for a modern car.

My manual Golf R mk7 (former car) had start/stop. (An EU car, Swedish).

The USA/NAR spec cars are a weird spec compared to EU built EU spec VAG cars.....so either of us could be right or wrong!!...

Sounds like your replacement AGM is the bigger H6 size to get 780CCA...

Ha, yes it does seem like we get weird specs, including the manual in the Mk8 R, a weird win for us.

Still an H5 size, I didn’t have to move the bracket and still have room on the battery tray. We’ll see if it lasts longer than the stock one, or we won’t, R should be here in a few weeks.

Sorry but if your battery has a CCA of 780A then its likely to be the bigger H6 AGM

This info from my thread:-

Varta specifications (sizes are industry norms, capacities are standard):-
Battery case size H5/027/Group 47:- 242mm long, 175mm wide, 190mm high
Black Dynamic (Lead acid type) = 56Ah, 480A CCA (EN/SAE), 13.7Kgs (30.2lbs)
Blue Dynamic EFB (E.F.B. type) = 60Ah, 640A CCA (EN/SAE), 16.9Kgs (37.3lbs)
Silver Dynamic AGM (A.G.M. type) = 60Ah, 680A CCA (EN/SAE), 17.7Kgs (39lbs)

Battery case size H6/096/Group 48:- 278mm long, 175mm wide, 190mm high
Black Dynamic (Lead acid type) = 70Ah, 640A CCA (EN/SAE), 16.6Kgs (36.6lbs)
Blue Dynamic EFB (E.F.B. type) = 70Ah, 760A CCA (EN/SAE), 19.5Kgs (43lbs)
Silver Dynamic AGM (A.G.M. type) = 70Ah, 760A CCA (EN/SAE), 20.4Kgs (45lbs)

Yep, you made me look, it's the last one listed, 680 cca, not 780, H5 Group 47.

Yes my car is a DSG, with auto start/stop. I turn the darn thing off every time I start the car though.

The OEM battery in the car is a "SE BANG" brand model 6R0 915 105 B.

EFB type. Markings:

12v 69Ah 360A DIN
680A EN/SAE/GS

It doesn't have a group size anywhere that I could see, and I haven't measured it...
