Auto Headlights and Rain sensor retrofit

My windshield is cracked :| and always wanted to add this feature to the car.

So yes I will be replacing the windshield.

I mainly can only find people posting with the humidity sensor already installed on their windshield, then adding rain and light to it, and what to do.

Is there any DIY installs when you have a GTI with no sensors on windshield?

I have a Vagcom and looking for what part numbers I need, what model windshield , mirror assembly, sensor, the coding needed, along with what wires I need to run up to the sensor.

I think this is the wiring diagram, however not sure if its mk6 or 7

I hope this is not posted 10000x and I am not just blind, thanks for any help. :D

I too would like to do this some day so i'll be watching this thread... its really all about what the BCM can handle from what Ive read so far...

^^^^ the BCM is a fairly sophisticated device and IMO it can handle lots of variations - but there is a limit and it does get very cranky when its asked to operate incompatible transducers!! So, my suggestion is to choose the sensor carefully - please!

As for the debate about whether to use the OEM sensor that is attached to the windshield (it's not glued- it sits on a pad), or whether to rely on the "Chinese" sensor that is interposed on the connector at the back of the LDS (the rotary switch) - IMO it's all about personal preference vs the added expense and effort needed for the OEM unit,

Personally, I like a fully integrated solution - but I can understand those that prefer the simpler approach

Don
PS: Whilst the "Chinese" add-on sensor is OK - it does have a different process for some facilities such as Leaving Home.

No Vagcom needed for auto head lights.
Just get the switch and sensor.

Yea I'm not a fan of this, looking for completely oem solution.

So I found these, i guess I need a new euro switch with the Auto feature? Or will it just work on its own.

I would like to believe that it's simply a matter of buying the auto-switch as plug-and-play, but I suspect this will not be the case.

My hunch (and I hope that I'm incorrect) is that the wiring loom at the back of your existing LDS (rotary light switch) will be missing the connecting wire to the BCM for the Auto function (VW doesn't tend to install wires in its looms that aren't used)

Here is a WD that I made-up showing the connections on a fully functioning LDS

As a suggestion, remove your existing LDS from the dash (it ain't difficult-simply turn the switch partially anti-clockwise and then pull the LDS out). Then look at the rear connector - if you don't have a purple wire connected to pin #2 (the pin numbers are embossed into the connector housing), then you will need to run a new wire (complete with pins at both ends) to the BCM, pin #16 on Socket C.

So I made the retrofit. New windscreen with the sensor bracket. Auto dimmable mirror etc. Got everything installed and coded. Rain sensor and mirror works great! The guy could not make the auto function work with the light sensor. Ofc.. my rotary switch connector is missing the purple wire on pin 2... You know where I could get such cable?

Perhaps this?

The connectors will suit the BCM pin and I suspect it will also apply at the rotary switch end. The lenght of the wire will need to be extended,

Thanks Don! That looks to be it... I found them in different lengths though. You think one with 50 cm would be a safe bet?

hmm........ not sure, but it really doesn't matter because you can easily add more wire if needed with a soldering iron, or a crimp tool!

Got the wire added from pin 2 to BCM & now the auto headlight position works! It's really good & I would say, if you want this feature, don't go for some cheap aftermarket solution... It will never work as good as OEM.

My only issue now is CH/LH doesn't seems to work, even if I have it on in the car settings.

Well well... I will be ordering OBDeleven soon, so will see what I can do myself.
