Those are some enticing prices! With Stage 2 tunes no longer sold, what is the upgrade path past Stage 1 now? The Stage 3 IS38 doesn't require a downpipe?

By the numbers, it seems as though the Low Torque Stage 1 flash is intended to be a little bit more 'friendly' to the factory clutch in the GTI's 6MT -- is this a reasonable assessment? Considering my options, if I'm going to need to get an upgraded clutch before long after software anyway, then it almost makes sense to simply opt for the High Torque option.

Driving style kills the clutch.

There are lots of people on here tuned and still on the stock assembly because they don't have clutch killing habits. Or you could torch it day 1 by slipping it while hard launching or smashing the gas to the floor in 5th or 6th at 2k rpm.

I'm sure APR has had their fill of complaints about not offering Stage 2 anymore, but I just have to vent into the void a little...

I bought into the more expensive route of APRPlus, and specifically also purchased the TCU tune - making it even more expensive - with the expectation that I'd go Stage 2 when my warranty period was up (it's still not - I drive low miles and covid practically assured that I'd time out versus mileage). I even got the APR intake and catback to be "compliant" with the APRPlus warranty, and knowing that those upgrades were recommended for stage 2 anyways, I figured why not. I have no need or desire to go IS38 or beyond, and I just kind of feel like the carpet was pulled out from under us existing customers.

I had Cobb on a previous car with no issues - even with the OTS file that was relatively-regarded as, well, crap. I should have just kept it stock and gone with Cobb later. I was allured by the illusion of getting the best of both words by having a little more fun "OEM+" experience and then a solid upgrade path out of warranty. Shame on me I guess.

I mean, it's not like we wanted to make this decision. It's either comply or die. We'd like to stay in business for the long haul. Others may like to take the risk and see how it goes, but tuners, shops and now customers that are out of compliance are dropping like flies. 🤷‍♂️

FWIW I'm was happy when I had the IS38 low TQ tune and even happier now with the high TQ tune.

For my money, the Stage 1 Low-Torque is where it's at if you want a car that's still very refined in the power/torque delivery. The high-torque rush that comes on is fun, but it only narrows the usable power band a bit and magnifies the feeling of that top-end taper when the IS20 starts running out of breath. You're also generating more heat when going full bore on the torque production.

Yeah the low torque tune is the Goldilocks of it all. Being able to use all of first and second at almost full throttle makes city driving effortlessly point and shoot.

And at the top end, having power past 6k makes the car more enjoyable to drive because there’s now a reason to rev it out!

Or third option, lawyer up and fight back.

Hey Arin, I have a 2018 7.5 1.8 Golf with IS20, Unitronic tune and Unitronic downpipe. I want to go IS38, but my transmission is the automatic 09G. Unitronic does not have an IS38 tune if auto 09G transmission. Could you please confirm if your APR STAGE 3 IS38 W/DP 91 AKI can be used? All good if also using Uni DP? Thanks.
