APR/JB4 "Stacked Tuning" Sets new IS38 MPH record!

Yesterday I went to Cecil Country Dragway for their last test-n-tune of the season to test out my latest stacked JB4/APR/Meth tuned IS38 setup. I was able to set a new trap speed world record for a stock MK7/MQB turbo as well as a fastest street tire (non-drag radial) FWD MK7 time to date. My runs were all done on my daily driven street summer tires in 40°F weather on a poorly prepped surface, so I was unable to go full throttle until just before the 1/8th mile marker without just spinning out of control or getting violent wheel-hop… so there is definitely more left in the her. My fastest times were also the highest MPH of the day, so that goes to show how bad conditions really were as usually the opposite will happen as you gain more traction.
My best et was a 12.2… but the 1/4 mile speed sensor ended up breaking on my run and was replaced right afterwords. I switched lanes and went 12.3@ 121.8mph/197kmh little while later. The car was hot lapped for the most part and all of my runs were between 12.2-12.6@121-121.8, other than a couple where I tried to go WOT down the whole track that were spin city in the 13’s with much lower trap speeds. Next season I plan on going back on some radials in better track conditions and I expect to take an easy 0.5-1 sec off my time and gain at least another MPH or two by being able to go WOT through the first half of the track. I’m also going to run full race gas and raise the boost some more with the JB4.

My car is a 2015 GTI PP 4dr DSG. Track prep included removing the spare tire, tools and seats, just over half tank of pump 93oct (~7 gallons) and mixed with 1 gallon of 100octane (no E85 blend), so about 95octane in the tank. It weighed in at just over 3050lbs without me in the car and I’m another 230lbs too... so with everything I removed and me in my car setup the way it was yesterday, it equals about as much weight as many smaller framed people driving their base GTI's the way they came from the factory lol. Everything else was setup exactly the way I daily drive it and tires were my everyday street summer tire (PSS) that have a good amount of camber in the front for track duty, which lessens the contact patch significantly too. I launched at 2800RPMs and went half/feathered throttle through all of 1st, 2nd and half of 3rd gear... then I was able to lay into the throttle because track conditions were sooo bad, this is why I picked up so much speed on the back half. Keep in mind that on a tuned car, throttle input is ramped up too... so when I say half throttle, it really equals ~ between 70-85% throttle body opening according to logs I've taken.

Here is my setup…
-IS38 Turbo installed (S3/Golf R unit)
-APR Stage 2+ IS38 93oct Tune
-APR DSG TCU Tune matching turbo software
-APR Catted Downpipe w/ 3" exhaust adapter
-APR Intercooler
-APR Carbon Fiber Intake w/ grille cut-outs
-APR Oil Catch-Can
-APR Turbo Muffler
-APR Boost Tap
-APR IC Hoses
-BMS Water/Meth injection kit with custom made under-hood pump mount using the washer bottle to feed a CM5 nozzle
-JB4 stacked tuning that also controls the meth system and using JB4 Bluetooth Connect rev3 adding 2psi of boost between 4500-6000RPMS and tapering up and down from there. Also raised closed loop fuel by 20.
-AWE Touring Exhaust w/ black tips
-Forge Diverter Valve
-Spulen Intake/Boost/Throttle Pipes
-034 Motorsports Torque Mount insert
-Fluidampr Crank Pulley
-Bilstein B14 Adjustable Coilovers
-IntegratedEngineering Camber plates with -2.2* front camber
-18x8.5 Enkei RS05RR
-StopTech ST40 355mm BBK w/ 2pc rotors
-Wheel Stud conversion kit
-255/35-18 Michelin Pilot Super Sports

All in all I am happy with the results and the car is making a ton of usable and reliable power. JB4 stacked tuning and methanol injection is the real deal too. My car with almost the exact same setup minus those two mods was “only” able to go 12.5@117.3 just a few months prior. I recommend talking to George @ Burger Tuning if you're interested in this setup, it will meet or exceed stg3 power on the stock US GTI or Golf R fuel system. Dyno session will be happening soon too, I'm expecting around 410whp/420tq (+/-10) with this setup.

Congrats man! This is the setup I've been. Hoping to run since the day I got my JB1 so it's great to see how potent it can be!

So basically a comfortable 4 door FWD car with a big trunk go's low 12's at 120+ MPH on a basic setup with an OEM turbo and Meth. That's pretty incredible. DR's will help a lot with that setup. I have no doubt you'll break into the 11's.

Now just throw in some mounts! The BFI stage 2 mounts I have have eliminated wheel hop. I'm shooting for a is38 build similar to this by next summer. Thanks for the inspiration.

With radials, better track conditions and higher octane fuel, you'll definitely hit the 11's!!

Sickest mk7 oem turbo GTI out there for sure. This is now my long term setup goal... Currently stage 2 and this is much more accessible than a stage 3 setup.

I also like the fact that you're running a full weight 4 doors. Most fast mk7 (such as Tyler Aul, which also has a sick car) are weight reduced 2 doors... Keep up the good work!! ?

Thanks again guys!

No mounts for me bud, I can't stand the nvh that comes with them in a car that I daily drive. I couldn't even stand the BFI torque mount insert lol. At least 95% of wheel hop can be resolved with a proper tire and suspension setup as that is the where the hoping starts from. Replacing mounts only fixes the reaction to the problem (the rocking back and fourth of the engine), it's the tire that leaves the ground and starts to skip that is the route of the problem. I never had wheel hop with my last tire setup and don't expect any with runs on MT ET-R radials either.

If you could go back in time, would you just have gotten an R for the awd traction?
Nope. I didn't buy the car to drag race with, I bought it because it was cheap, efficient, handled well and had tons of tuneability. The R's AWD system may have more traction from a dig, but the Rs Haldex was actually engineered for VW/Audi's CUV's and Wagons... which is why the FWD variants have better handling characteristics. I already have a monster of a car with a proper AWD system, the R's would have just been a major disappointment unfortunately... So I bought the GTI with one of the most advanced FWD systems on the market for $10K less than the R I would have bought and sunk that money into mods instead .

I love this car too BTW, because it's not the "top tier model", other peoples expectations always seem lower and it just shocks them that much more when they realize how quick my GTI really is :D. Non-VW guys cannot believe its an internally stock engine using a factory VW turbo, they can never seem wrap their heads around it :p.

For sure, I think I could actually hit 11's on street tires if the conditions were better too. Thanks! I did remove the seats and spare tire though... but I'm a bigger guy and my car is far from the lightest model available like you said, so it all kind of balances out lol.
