Hello everybody,
I have a Mark 7 Jetta GLI with tons of mods to make it a sleeper on road courses. It handles amazingly and stops even better (Alcon 6-piston 380mm rotors). I had an APR DTR6054 turbo installed with an intercooler upgrade. I also have an APR catch can and a VW Racing oil cooler. Recently I added a large hood vent/extractor.
Last week at Road America the car hit 149.7 mph on the front straight. After the oil temps go over 250 (right after the first lap is completed - they then stop at low to mid 260's), the power is pulled significantly - the following lap the speed on the front straight will drop to 135 mph - so I'm losing maybe 100 HP? This was on a day with outside temps in the high 70's.
I spoke with the tech department at APR and they think I'm running into high intake temps - anything over 150 degrees will pull a lot of power. But I have an APR carbon fiber enclosed intake that feeds directly from the factory air opening, so the temps should not be getting that high. I've heard a rule of thumb for track driving is the intake temps usually never get more than 15 degrees above the outside temperature.
On the street, I never have issues with heat - even with pulls to high speeds.
Any thoughts? If I can get this fixed this sleeper Jetta will run with Cayman GT4's and C8 Corvettes (not Z06's).
Thanks
