Airflow for stock intake

Come someone explain/show me how the stock intake receives air from outside the car? At first I thought it was from the front grates under the hood on the right side since the airbox appears to be attached to it, but when I actually inspected the front grates, there were no holes!

Needless to say, I'm a bit confused how the stock airbox actually gets air from outside.

I recently installed an AEM intake which is similar to the injen, but finding out that the front grates were actually filled with no holes confused me as to how it gets fresh air...

I actually took a dremel tool and cut that opening out in front of the intake box and made it a ram air style intake...took the filter out and replaced it with the foam vwr filter...also removed the plastic tray that sit under the filter...

Did you notice any difference in actually cutting out the little blocked vents in the front? I have an AEM intake which is just like the injen. It makes me a bit sad that the intake doesnt have a clear path to actually air front the outside like a cold air intake

It's hard 2 tell because I have a turbo back exhaust and a tune
