A/C fan speed issues

Hi Everyone,

I have never done one of these threads and not sure if someone can help but I have a 2.0 TDI DSG Mk7 and I have gone on a long journey over the weekend 200+ miles each way and on both legs of the journey I had an issue with my ventilation system. I have had this issue once last summer and it has cropped up again now. doesn't seem to happen when driving around town or on short journeys.

I have a Golf Match with a normal Air Conditioning system. No special climate control or anything like that. Jut three knobs, one for temperature, one for fan speed (1 - 6) and one for vent location. I was driving at speeds of between 50 - 80 mph for most of the journey. The fan setting was on 3 and cooling the car perfectly and then all of a sudden, the air coming out became really weak and even if I have it on 6, I can hear the fan motor being loud but not a lot of air comes out of the vents. I also tried it with the A/C button on and off but the issue persists. I turn the whole system off for a while and open the windows and when I turn it back on it works fine. Gave me the issue once on my way there and twice on my way back.

I usually drive the car in Eco mode but read online that it does something to the A/C to ensure the car is as efficient as possible but I drove half the journey in normal mode yesterday and the issue didn't go away.

Can someone please let me know what I can try before I take it to a garage and spend a lot of money on all the diagnostics.

Thank you

Sounds like one of the actuator door flaps in the dash is getting stuck.

Would that happen mid journey even if the setting are not being changed?
Honestly not sure. I would hookup VCDS, pull up the a/c system module and see if you can find anything abnormal.

Do you have the auto recirc? It "senses" incoming air and will change to recirculation if it "detects" a change with incoming air. Like Diggs said, should start with in cabin filter. That, or flow door actuator as Jacob suggested.

My 2015 golf tdi is having the exact same issue. Fan just stops then kicks back in later, usually, but now getting worse. A/C is working but no fan. Did you figure out what was going on?

Evaporator freezing up will reduce the airflow...
This. Happened on my car a year or so ago - my compressor ended up having a small leak which caused the system to be low on refrigerant and iced up the evaporator on longer drives. Airflow and cooler air would return after the car sat for a bit and everything thawed out. I overhauled the whole system and all has been well since.
