I'm usually at 26-27 per tank during the winter and 29-31per tank in the summer hand calculated. On long several hundred mile interstate trips I can get 35. Not too bad imo. Are you 4motion? I am and definitely think it does offer a small penalty compared to the fwd wagons.

Yes 4motion, usually the same 26-27 calculated at the pump. I'll take the penalty for the DSG and the AWD :)

My best full-tank on my GSW 4Mo with racks, IS20, tune, blah blah blah is dead on 30 hand calc'd for a 100% highway trip. The racks kill ~3 mpg. My long term average over ~35K miles is ~24.5 (I use Fuelly to track it all). I've seen upwards of 38 uncorrected on the dash during a single commute (all highway) but it's ~8% high so more like 34 or so. Single data points don't make a dataset....

Ordered some new tools from a place called Harry Epstein tools which is a well respected source for quality tools according to the garage journal forms. Pretty cool they show country of origin on everything. Another perk is that they will take requests for box art, and I recurved this awesome painted moose on my package. Check them out!

I was away from my house for five days for the holiday weekend, and when I popped the hood I saw something had gotten into the golf. Five days! Can't catch a break with the rodents around here.

Began disassembly for an is38 install, stay tuned!

IS38 Installed! Flashed ECU with 1.8 IS38 Unitronic Software and went for a short test drive.

Install took about 5 hours (including beer breaks). Between my brother and me this is the 4th MQB turbo we have installed, so we knew what to expect.

First Impressions:
'In Boost' rpm went up by 500 or 700 rpm. On the IS20 I was able to blip the throttle at 20mph in my neighborhood and get up to 30 quickly, not so much with the IS38. I know this has to do with what gear I'm in.
It is smoother. There is less surge when the turbo starts creating boost. Which made it feel slower, but looking at the speedometer says otherwise.
It pulls way harder above 70mph. And this was my main complaint with the IS20. With the IS38, 70 to 85 is quick.
3rd gear seems to hang longer. Maybe this is unrelated, but I will re-flash the TCU before I go out next time.

Hopefully will be able to get it to the drag strip / have dragy runs soon.

I need a IS38 in my life. Any logs of the tune with the IS38? How does the IS38 on pump compare to when you had your IS20 on Ethanol?

No logs, my JB4 is on the shelf and that's the best way for me to log. Maybe in the future.

Again this is from a 10 minute drive this morning, but initially I would say under 3800 rpm it feels the same if not slower than IS20/E30. Above 3800 it feels smoother and faster. This is on 93. Next fill up I will probably put E20 in and see how it feels.

Throw the JB4 back in and just run Map 0 so you can log and keep an eye on things! ;)

If under 3800 it still feels as fast as a IS20 on 93, I'll be happy. Rona derailed the shit out of my modding plans, but at least my setup is solid right now and no gremlins to chase. :) The more info I get on 1.8s with IS38s, the better position I'll be in to tune mine when the time comes.

I think next year this will be my upgrade - go from the IS20 to 38. I am finding I desire the top-end power more and more with the IS20.

My gut is telling me to go with one gold stripe, leave the emblem silver. Or maybe back to red stripe. Of maybe full black. What do you guys think? I wish it was a closer match to my wheels.

That looks awesome. Let me whisper this in your ear.

You need some ED's repliacs. ;)

Man I know! I just haven't been able to pull the trigger, they're a good chunk of change.

I also keep eyeing GTI/R/SEL seats.

In other fun news my Mom wants my IS20 on her sportwagen now, so I'll probably put that in her car at some point this summer. That'll be mildly tuned with the JB4 she already has.

Your mom is awesome. Don't forget to teach her how to mix ethanol. :)

Keep an eye out for a used set of EDs?

Great build! The gold trim is a nice touch, I'm a fan. I think I like the double gold the most, but the single is nice too.
