is that your brake pads knocking back and forth in the caliper? if your pads don't have retaining clips, or the clips are broken/loose/old, they will make noise when going from reverse to drive and vice versa sometimes.

but if that noise is coming from the trans, I'm not sure if it's normal or not

Unfortunately not. As i mentioned, i can hear it coming from directly inside the transmission when lying underneath it such as in the video!

So what’s your question then? If you’ve isolated where the noise is coming from…

I was hoping someone with a more technical understanding of transmissions would have an idea of the cause!. But doesn’t matter really, it’s booked in at a specialist next week. Just praying to the good lord it’s not going to be astronomically expensive

is it a 7 or 7.5? my cupra 290 with the 7 speed has a noise like this and is still present with a brand new gearbox/mech/diff, i personally think its the diff.

Sorry for the late reply, been away with work.
It's the 7.

The specialist said it's fine and nothing to worry about. Personally I can't agree, mostly on the basis that it's been getting worse over the last few months, it didn't do this when I purchased the car. I did tell them this but they said it shouldn't be of any concern. I think they're wrong though.

even my mates cupra 290 on 22k miles does it too, its 100% diff related if you ask me.

They state it's simply backlash, which makes sense.
But mine is very pronounced.

I'm going to do a trans fluid change this weekend and see what difference it makes and also check if any metal shavings fall out too.

Like I say mate my new gearbox has done 5k miles and is still doing it, both have done it. I also went in two cupras at the vw dealership and they were the same

Trans fluid came out rather clean. No metal filings and wasn't dirty or cloudy.

New fluid in seems to have quietened it down somehow. Shifting 1st to 2nd seems a little more difficult when cold though.

Best guess is it was either underfilled or the wrong viscosity? Causing any backlash to be exaggerated due to lack of proper lubrication?
